al-Tafsir al-Nabawi: Muqaddimah Ta’siliyyah ma‘a Dirasah Hadithiyyah li-Ahadith al-Tafsir al-Nabawi al-Sarih (Prophetic Exegesis: A Foundational Introduction and Hadith Study of Explicit Prophetic Exegetical Traditions) is a contemporary two-volume study in Quranic exegesis and hadith criticism by Khalid al-Batli (خالد بن عبد العزيز بن حمد الباتلي) .

Background and Academic Origin

The work originated as a doctoral dissertation submitted to the Department of Sunnah and Its Sciences at the College of Usul al-Din at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh . It was defended in Muharram 1429 AH before an examination committee comprising Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Subayhi (rapporteur), Anis ibn Ahmad Jamal (member), and Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Sharif (member), receiving an evaluation of excellent (mumtaz) . The work was published in Riyadh by Dar Kunuz Ishbilya in 1432 AH / 2011 CE across two volumes .

Scope and Structure

The book is structured into an introduction, two primary parts, a conclusion, and technical indexes :

  • Part One: The Theoretical Study (al-Dirasah al-Ta'siliyyah): Comprises three chapters .
    • Chapter 1 examines the Prophet Muhammad’s explanation of the Quran across three sections: the necessity of relying on the Sunnah in exegesis, the scholarly debate over whether the Prophet explained the whole Quran or only parts of it, and the categories and modes of Prophetic explanation .
    • Chapter 2 examines the prohibition and danger of speaking about the Quran without knowledge .
    • Chapter 3 reviews the attention and methodologies given by hadith scholars (muhaddithun) to the science of exegesis .
  • Part Two: Collection and Study of Explicit Exegetical Hadiths (Jam‘ wa-Dirasat al-Ahadith al-Marfu‘ah fi al-Tafsir al-Sarih): The main practical body of the work, consisting of an exhaustive collection and hadith-critical analysis of marfu‘ narrations arranged sequentially according to the surahs of the Quran .

Methodology

The author adopted a defined methodology for collecting and examining the narrations:

  1. Inclusion Criteria: Gathers all attributed marfu‘ hadiths that provide direct, explicit lexical explanation (al-tafsir al-lafzi al-sarih) of a Quranic verse or a specific word within it, without limiting the collection to a single collection or a pre-set degree of authenticity .
  2. Text Presentation: Cites the verse under discussion in Uthmanic script, followed by the hadith text recorded with its chain of transmission (isnad) from an original hadith source, prioritizing the highest chains (‘uluww al-isnad) .
  3. Extraction (Takhrij): Identifies the sources of each tradition. If the tradition appears in Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim, the citation is generally restricted to the Nine Books of hadith (al-Kutub al-Tis‘ah); if outside them, source documentation is expanded to include other collections chronologically and by prominence, noting parallel transmissions (mutaba‘at) .
  4. Isnad and Text Evaluation: Assesses the reliability of narrators and the continuity or rupture of each transmission line . If the narration is weak, supporting chains (mutaba‘at) and witness narrations (shawahid) are surveyed to determine whether it can be elevated to acceptability, concluding with an overall evaluation and citations of classical scholars' verdicts .
  5. Lexical Analysis: Provides explanations for obscure or uncommon vocabulary (al-gharib) occurring within each hadith text .
