al-Tafsir al-Munir fi al-’Aqidah wa-al-Shari’ah wa-al-Manhaj (The Illuminating Exegesis on Creed, Law, and Method) is a contemporary multi-volume commentary on the Quran written by the Syrian jurist and scholar Wahba al-Zuhayli (d. 1436 AH / 2015 CE) .
Background and Composition
Al-Zuhayli embarked on authoring al-Tafsir al-Munir only after producing extensive multi-volume works in Islamic legal theory and comparative jurisprudence—such as Usul al-Fiqh al-Islami and al-Fiqh al-Islami wa-Adillatuh—and following more than thirty years of university teaching and work in Hadith verification . His stated aim was to reconnect modern readers with the Quran through an accessible, methodologically rigorous presentation that combines transmitted tradition (al-ma’thur) with rational analysis (al-ma’qul) .
The author sought to expand the scope of Quranic legal extraction (istinbat) beyond the narrow juridical rulings of specific legal branches to encompass a holistic framework covering theological beliefs (‘aqidah), ethics, social organization, and behavioural methodology (manhaj) . He also emphasized purging exegesis of unverified material, explicitly avoiding Judeo-Christian legendary lore (isra’iliyyat) and fabricated reports (ahadith mawdu’ah) regarding the virtues of individual surahs . While acknowledging scientific reflections, al-Zuhayli noted that the Quran remains primarily a book of divine guidance and legislation rather than a text of natural sciences .
Structure and Methodology
The work spans sixteen volumes and examines the entire Quran according to a systematic, thematic structure . Each chapter and passage is examined through seven distinct steps:
- Thematic Division: Grouping verses into coherent thematic units (wahadat mawdu’iyyah) under explanatory headings .
- General Overview: Providing an overall summary of each surah’s themes, authentic virtues, and correlations (munasabat) between successive surahs and verses .
- Lexical Analysis: Clarifying vocabulary and linguistic meanings .
- Occasions of Revelation: Citing authentic historical circumstances of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) and drawing upon authoritative works of the prophetic biography (sira) for events like the battles of Badr and Uhud .
- Detailed Commentary: Offering exegesis and exposition (al-tafsir wa-al-bayan) based on authoritative classical commentaries .
- Extracted Rulings: Deriving broad legal, theological, ethical, and societal directives from the verses .
- Rhetoric and Syntax: Analyzing grammatical parsing (i’rab) and rhetorical features (balaghah) where necessary to elucidate meanings without overburdening non-specialists .
In addition to sequential commentary, al-Zuhayli incorporated thematic exegesis (tafsir mawdu’i) across recurring subjects—such as financial usury (riba), inheritance, marriage, prescribed punishments (hudud), and prophetic stories—providing a comprehensive treatment at the first occurrence and cross-referencing subsequent passages .
Relation to Other Works and Reception
Al-Tafsir al-Munir is the most comprehensive of three exegetical works composed by al-Zuhayli . While al-Tafsir al-Munir was directed toward specialists and advanced students with detailed legal derivations and linguistic commentary, he also authored al-Tafsir al-Wajiz in a single volume for general readers, and al-Tafsir al-Wasit in three volumes as an intermediate exposition .
The first edition of al-Tafsir al-Munir was published in 1411 AH (1991 CE) jointly by Dar al-Fikr in Damascus and Dar al-Fikr al-Mu’asir in Beirut . The book received wide recognition across the Muslim world and was awarded the prize for the Best Book in the Islamic World in 1995 .
