al-Tadhkira lil-Humaydi (The Reminder by al-Humaydi) is a hadith compendium by the Andalusian scholar and traditionist Abu Abd Allah al-Humaydi (d. 488 AH / 1095 CE), compiling selected transmissions and narrations from his teachers .

Composition and Content

Al-Humaydi compiled al-Tadhkira as a personal memorandum of narrations for his companion Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Habib . The book functions as a selected anthology of al-Humaydi's broader transmitted repertoire (marwiyyat) . Within its text, al-Humaydi cites reports and chains of transmission from various teachers and authorities he met during his travels, including Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Daqqaq, Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Uthman al-Umari, and the Egyptian copyist Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Baqa al-Warraq .

Transmission and Reception

al-Tadhkira was circulated and transmitted directly from al-Humaydi during his lifetime:

  • In an uncommon teacher-from-student transmission, al-Humaydi's principal master, Ibn Hazm, narrated the book directly on the authority of al-Humaydi .
  • Ibn al-Batti (Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi), the last surviving student to transmit from al-Humaydi, heard the work from him in 485 AH .
  • Abd al-Baqi ibn Ahmad ibn Sulayman al-Shatibi also studied and heard al-Tadhkira directly under al-Humaydi's audition in the month of Safar, 485 AH .

The work is referenced in later bibliographical literature, including Hajji Khalifa's Kashf al-zunun, under the entry Tadhkirat al-Humaydi .

Preservation and Publication

The work was preserved in manuscript within a collective codex (majmu') held at Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya (MS Hadith 1558), transcribed in the hand of Sibt Ibn Hajar . al-Tadhkira was subsequently edited by Abu Abd al-Rahman Ibn Aqil al-Zahiri and published in Beirut and Riyadh .
