al-Tadhkira fi al-Fiqh ala Madhhab al-Imam Ahmad (The Reminder in Jurisprudence According to the School of Imam Ahmad) is an intermediate-level manual of Hanbali jurisprudence authored by the Baghdad-based jurist Abu al-Wafa Ibn Aqil (431–513 AH / 1040–1119 CE) . The work outlines the branches of Hanbali law across all standard legal chapters, presenting selected rulings and legal preferences .

Composition and Methodology

A manuscript note indicates that Ibn 'Aqil completed the composition of the text in 474 AH . The work was composed as an intermediate legal manual (matn mutawassit), neither excessively long nor overly concise .

Ibn 'Aqil restricts the discussion in the majority of the book to the Hanbali school, though he occasionally mentions rulings from the other three major Sunni schools of law and prominent regional jurists, particularly in the chapter on inheritance (al-fara'id) . In presenting the school's positions, the author lists conflicting reports and narrations from Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, systematically weighing them (tarjih) and designating a single sound or preferred opinion . Additionally, the text incorporates underlying textual and rational proofs for select issues, following the method characteristic of early Hanbali authorities .

Reception and Influence

Al-Tadhkira was recorded as a single volume by biographical and bibliographical historians, including Ibn Rajab in al-Dhayl ala Tabaqat al-Hanabila and Mujir al-Din al-Ulaymi in al-Manhaj al-Ahmad . It served as a foundational source for later Hanbali jurists; al-Samarri incorporated the text in its entirety into his comprehensive legal compilation al-Mustaw'ib, and al-Mardawi relied upon it as one of the reference sources for al-Insaf fi Ma'rifat al-Rajih min al-Khilaf . The modern scholar Ibn Badran observed that the work established a single relied-upon position in the school based on what the author authenticated and chose, while preserving the early tradition of incorporating legal reasoning and evidence .

Manuscripts and Publication

A manuscript copy is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (MS 2776 / 87 fiqh Hanbali), transcribed in 511 AH during Ibn 'Aqil's lifetime by Abu al-'Abbas Ahmad ibn Abi Nasr Muhammad ibn Ghalib from the author's personal copy (with another cataloging record bearing the date 20 Rajab 621 AH) . Microfilm reproductions are held at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh and Umm al-Qura University in Mecca .

The work was edited by Nasir ibn Sa'ud al-Salamah and published in a single volume by Dar Ishbiliya in Riyadh in 1422 AH / 2001 CE .
