al-Sunna li-Ibn Abi Asim wa-ma‘aha Zilal al-Janna lil-Albani is a foundational Sunni theological compilation composed by the 3rd-century hadith scholar Ibn Abi Asim (206–287 AH / 822–900 CE), accompanied by the hadith verification and authentication apparatus Zilal al-Janna fi Takhrij al-Sunna by the modern scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) .
Authorship and Methodology
The primary text, Kitab al-Sunna, was authored by Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn ‘Amr ibn Abi ‘Asim al-Dahhak ibn Makhlad al-Shaybani (also cited as ‘Amr ibn Abi ‘Asim), a scholar from Basra who adhered to the literalist legal approach (al-zahir) and rejected analogical reasoning (qiyas) . Regarded as one of the early works documenting Sunni doctrine, the text employs the traditional method of hadith scholars (muhaddithun) by presenting transmitted reports (athar) and prophetic hadiths with their full chains of transmission (isnads) under specific chapter headings that delineate the intended theological points .
Contents and Structure
The book addresses core Sunni theological tenets through transmitted traditions, divided across several major thematic areas :
- Adherence to the Sunnah and the Community: Mandating adherence to the prophetic tradition and the path of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, warning against theological schism and sectarian division, and condemning religious innovations (bida‘) and heresy .
- Divine Decree (al-Qadar): Transmitting traditions regarding divine predestination and related issues .
- Divine Attributes (Sifat Allah): Affirming divine attributes, including God's speech (kalam), the beatific vision in the Hereafter (ru'ya), the nightly descent (nuzul), the Foot, the Hand, laughter, wonder, hearing, God being above the heavens, and His ascending over the Throne (al-istiwa' 'ala al-'Arsh) .
- Eschatology and the Hereafter: Narrations on the Prophet's Basin (al-hawd), the Scale (al-mizan), intercession (al-shafa‘a), the passing over Hellfire, the reckoning, the bodily resurrection, the entry of seventy thousand into Paradise without reckoning, and the believers visiting and being addressed by their Lord in Paradise .
- Nature of Faith (Iman): Documenting that faith increases and decreases .
- Governance and Companions: The obligation of hearing and obeying rulers (sam‘ wa-ta‘a), giving sincere counsel to authorities, maintaining patience under their rule, and the virtues and legitimacy of the Rightly Guided Caliphs and the rest of the ten promised Paradise .
Modern Verification and Editions
In the 20th century, the hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani prepared a critical apparatus titled Zilal al-Janna fi Takhrij al-Sunna (The Shades of Paradise in the Verification of al-Sunnah) . Al-Albani graded the individual chains of transmission, evaluated narrator reliability, and classified the authenticity of each narration included in Ibn Abi Asim's text .
The joint work was published by al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut across several editions, beginning with its first edition in 1400 AH / 1980 CE, followed by editions in 1405 AH, 1413 AH, and a fifth edition in 1426 AH / 2005 CE comprising 764 pages in a single volume . Kitab al-Sunna has also received independent academic verification by other editors, such as Basim ibn Faysal al-Jawabira .
