Kitab al-Siyam (The Book of Fasting) is a hadith work compiled by the traditionist and judge Abu Bakr Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Firyabi (d. 301 AH / 913–914 CE) that gathers prophetic traditions and narrations pertaining to fasting and its legal rulings .

Transmission and Isnads

The work was transmitted from al-Firyabi through his student Abu al-Qasim Ibrahim ibn Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Khiraqi (d. 374 AH) . From al-Khiraqi, it was transmitted by Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Jawhari, and from him by Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Ansari . It was subsequently passed down through Abu Hafs Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Tabarzadh to later Syrian and Egyptian hadith scholars, including al-Fakhr Ali ibn Ahmad al-Bukhari, Ahmad ibn Shayban, and Zaynab bint Ali ibn Kamil .

Later scholars received the text along these chains; Abu al-Hajjaj al-Mizzi heard the third part (al-juz' al-thalith) and received an authorization (ijaza) for the rest, which was in turn transmitted to scholars such as Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani via Abu Ishaq al-Tanukhi and al-Kamal Ahmad ibn Abd al-Haqq . Abu Tahir al-Silafi also transmitted texts from al-Firyabi via the line of al-Khiraqi and al-Jawhari .

Manuscripts and Printed Editions

The work was divided into multiple parts (ajza'), but survives incompletely:

  • A manuscript preserved in Damascus at the Zahiriyya Library (within the collections of the Madrasa al-Umariyya) contains only the fourth and fifth parts of the compilation .
  • Another manuscript is recorded in the Şehid Ali Pasha collection in Istanbul (MS 2822) .

The surviving portion was edited by Abd al-Wakil al-Nadwi and published by al-Dar al-Salafiyya in Bombay (1412 AH / 1992 CE), published alongside a supplement containing Fawa'id min hadith Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Firyabi . It was also edited by Mus'ad al-Sa'dani and published by Maktabat Adwa' al-Salaf in Riyadh (1418 AH) .
