al-Siraj al-Wahhaj ala Matn al-Minhaj (The Blazing Lamp upon the Text of the Curriculum) is a concise legal commentary on al-Nawawi's foundational Shafi'i text Minhaj al-Talibin, authored by the Egyptian jurist Muhammad al-Zuhri al-Ghamrawi (d. after 1337 AH / 1918 CE).

Background and Purpose

The work was composed at the request of the prominent bookseller Shaykh Mustafa al-Babi al-Halabi, who asked al-Ghamrawi to prepare a manageable, accessible commentary on al-Nawawi's Minhaj. In his introduction, al-Ghamrawi noted that although Minhaj al-Talibin was the standard reference relied upon by later Shafi'i jurists, earlier commentaries on it were either lengthy multi-volume works or dense treatises that contemporary students struggled to master. Furthermore, because unannotated copies of the Minhaj had become widely circulated, certain expressions remained obscure to readers without explanatory glosses. Al-Ghamrawi aimed to provide a concise companion text that could be read alongside the original manual.

Method and Scope

Al-Ghamrawi's methodology relied on distilling explanations, necessary qualifications (quyud), and legal parameters directly from the classical commentaries on the Minhaj. He sought to explain subtle textual allusions and define vocabulary using simplified, brief prose suited for practical study. The commentary moves phrase by phrase through the entire text of Minhaj al-Talibin, beginning with the linguistic and legal analysis of the author's opening basmala and hamdala formulas and continuing across the standard chapters of Shafi'i positive law (furu').
