al-Sira al-Nabawiya wa al-Dawa fi al-Ahd al-Makki (The Prophetic Biography and Da'wah in the Meccan Period) is a contemporary study of the Meccan phase of the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the methodologies of early Islamic propagation, authored by the Egyptian scholar Ahmad Ahmad Ghallush . The author completed the work in Nasr City, Cairo, on 11 Rabi' al-Awwal 1424 AH (12 May 2003 CE) .
Purpose and Methodology
The author prepared the work to merge the biographical narrative of the Prophet ﷺ with the study of Islamic da'wah into a unified framework . Ghallush stated that the Prophetic biography should not remain confined to books or limited to verbal recitation, but should serve as an active model and behavioral guide for Muslims . The book follows a moderate, balanced approach (manhaj wasat) that avoids excess and deficiency, relying on verified textual evidence to depict the realistic and principled nature of early Islam .
Contents and Structure
The book is organized into an introduction and three main chapters divided into thematic sections (mabahith):
- Chapter One: The Global Reality Prior to the Advent of Islam (al-Waqi' al-'Alami Qubayl Maji' al-Islam): Examines the geographical, political, social, and religious conditions of the major nations and powers of the era—namely the Arabs, the Byzantines (Romans), the Persians, and the Indians . It concludes with an analysis of the global environment's readiness and need for the message of Islam, addressing issues such as widespread religious misguidance, human subjugation, and the anticipation of a new prophet .
- Chapter Two: The Prophetic Biography from Birth to Emigration (al-Sira al-Nabawiyya min al-Milad ila al-Hijra): Chronologically surveys the Prophet's ﷺ life prior to the migration to Medina . It covers his lineage, portents of his birth (irhasat), early childhood among Banu Sa'd, the opening of his chest, youth, travels to the Levant, commercial work, marriage to Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, and participation in the rebuilding of the Kaaba . It then explores the beginnings of revelation, the trials and persecutions inflicted by Quraysh, the Year of Sorrow ('Am al-Huzn), the Prophet's ﷺ subsequent marriages, the journey of al-Isra' wa al-Mi'raj, outreach to surrounding tribes, and the first and second pledges of al-Aqabah .
- Chapter Three: The Prophet's Movement with Da'wah in Mecca (Harakat al-Nabi bi-al-Da'wa ila Allah Ta'ala fi Makka): Analyzes the conceptual and practical mechanisms of Islamic propagation in Mecca . It outlines da'wah methodologies, styles, media, and tools, contrasting the covert phase of individual outreach with the open, public proclamation of the message . This chapter also discusses methods of dialogue, engagement with visiting delegations, written messages, and the rhetorical styles of the Quran used in calling people to Islam .
