al-Sīrah al-Nabawiyyah: Durūs wa-ʿIbar (The Prophetic Biography: Lessons and Morals) is a concise study of the life of the Prophet Muhammad by the Syrian Islamic scholar Mustafa al-Sibai (d. 1384 AH / 1964 CE), focusing on analytical reflection, practical lessons, and religious guidance derived from prophetic history .
Composition and Purpose
The book originated as lecture notes that al-Sibai delivered to first-year students at the Faculty of Sharia . He subsequently transcribed and compiled these notes in Damascus during Ramadan 1381 AH (c. February–March 1962 CE) amidst severe illness .
In his preface, al-Sibai stated that his objective was to highlight the practical aspects of exemplary conduct (al-uswah) embedded within the prophetic narrative for Muslims, callers to Islam (duʿāt), and scholars of Islamic jurisprudence . He sought to present the Prophet's biography in a manner that inspires students and reformers to embody those moral lessons and revive the uprightness and guidance of the Muslim community .
Structure and Content
The work is organized into an introductory section containing two preparatory studies, followed by ten substantive chapters :
- Introduction:
- The Distinctive Features of the Prophetic Biography and the Benefit of Its Study: Discusses the historical authenticity, clarity across all life stages, realistic human exemplarity, and comprehensive scope of the Prophet's life .

Method and Reception
Rather than offering exhaustive narrative detail, the book adopts an analytical and educational approach, extracting core theological, moral, and social principles from key historical milestones . Later scholars frequently cited and categorized the work as a fundamental contemporary textbook for deriving practical and ideological insights from prophetic history .
The book has seen numerous printings, including several editions published by al-Maktab al-Islami in Damascus and Beirut, such as the fourth edition (1397 AH / 1977 CE), fifth edition (1400 AH / 1980 CE), seventh edition (1404 AH / 1984 CE), and eighth edition (1405 AH / 1985 CE) .
