al-Shifa bi-Ta'rif Huquq al-Mustafa (The Healing through the Definition of the Rights of the Chosen One), known in this edition as Mahdhuf al-Asanid (with chains of transmission omitted), is a celebrated treatise on the status, virtues, and legal rights of the Prophet Muhammad by the Maliki scholar and judge al-Qadi Iyad (d. 544 AH / 1149 CE) . In this format, the narrative is streamlined by dropping the full isnad chains to provide direct access to the prophetic descriptions, theological expositions, and legal rulings .

The work is organized systematically into four major divisions (aqsam), comprising multiple chapters (abwab) and sections (fusul) :

  • Part One: God's exaltation of the Prophet's stature in word and deed. It contains four chapters:

    4. The rulings on invoking blessings and peace upon him, as well as visiting his tomb (10 sections) .
  • Part Three: What is impossible, permissible, necessary, and valid regarding his person—a theological discussion described by the author as the core and essential fruit of the book, with preceding chapters serving as preparatory foundations. It contains two chapters:
    1. Matters pertaining to religious affairs and prophetic infallibility (16 sections) .
    2. Matters pertaining to his worldly states (9 sections) .
  • Part Four: The legal rulings concerning anyone who defames or insults him. It contains two primary chapters:
    1. Defining what constitutes defamation and insult against him (10 sections) .
    2. Rulings and punishments for those who hate or harm him (concluding with a supplementary third chapter in 5 sections addressing blasphemy against God, other prophets, angels, revealed scriptures, and the Prophet's household) .

Reception and Scholarly Assessment

The book gained widespread acclaim across the Islamic world among scholars and the wider public . Ahmad al-Maqqari observed in Azhar al-Riyad that its fame spread east and west, calling its luminous discourse a divine favor granted to al-Qadi Iyad . Al-Mulla Ali al-Qari described it as the most comprehensive work compiled on prophetic qualities (shama'il) , and Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi praised its composition as unparalleled in its genre .

A critical evaluation was recorded by al-Dhahabi, who remarked that the book contained weak or fabricated narrations along with tenuous interpretations . In response, scholars such as Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani argued that al-Dhahabi's critique was unduly severe, maintaining that the work is of immense benefit and unmatched in Islamic literature, while noting that its transmission of some weak narrations followed earlier compilations such as Shifa' al-Sudur by Abu al-Rabi' Sulayman ibn Sab' al-Sabti .

Commentaries and Derivative Works

Al-Shifa became the subject of extensive marginal commentaries, abridgments, and hadith evaluations:

  • Commentaries: Major commentaries include Muzil al-Khafa' 'an Alfaz al-Shifa by Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Shumunni (d. 872 AH) , Sharh al-Shifa by al-Mulla Ali al-Qari (d. 1014 AH) , al-Iktifa' fi Sharh Alfaz al-Shifa by Abd al-Baqi al-Yamani (d. 743 AH) , and later commentaries by Shihab al-Din al-Khafaji and Abd al-Ra'uf al-Munawi .
  • Hadith Extraction (takhrij): Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti produced a dedicated verification of its narrations titled Manahil al-Safa fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Shifa .
  • Abridgments and Redactions: Abridgments were prepared by al-Najm al-Asnawi (d. 763 AH) , Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Khujandi under the title al-Wafa , and Qutb al-Din al-Khaydari (d. 894 AH) titled al-Safa bi-Tahrir al-Shifa .
