al-Shia wa Ahl al-Bayt (The Shia and the Prophetic Household) is a polemical and theological work written in Arabic by the Pakistani scholar Ihsan Ilahi Zaheer (d. 1407 AH / 1987 CE) . The book examines the relationship between Shi'ism and the Ahl al-Bayt (the household of the Prophet), arguing that Shi'i doctrines diverge from the actual teachings, attitudes, and historical conduct of the Prophetic family .

Background and Purpose

Zaheer composed the book in the wake of the Iranian Revolution to address widespread misconceptions regarding Shi'i beliefs and to critique the call for ecumenism (taqrib) between Sunnis and Shi'is . The author stated that his aim was to educate both ordinary Shi'is—whom he described as often unaware of the foundational doctrines contained in their authoritative texts—and Sunnis seeking to understand theological distinctions .

Structure and Method

The work is organized into four main parts (abwab):

  1. Part One (al-Shia wa Ahl al-Bayt): Examines the linguistic and conceptual definitions of Shi'a and Ahl al-Bayt, arguing that Shi'i usage restricts the term to a narrow lineage rather than the broader household encompassing the Prophet's wives, daughters, and relatives .
  2. Part Two (al-Shia wa Mukhalafatuhum Ahl al-Bayt): Discusses instances where Shi'i positions contradict the stances and rulings of the Ahl al-Bayt, particularly regarding their reverence for the early Caliphs—Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar ibn al-Khattab, and Uthman ibn Affan—as well as the Prophet's companions and wives .
  3. Part Three (al-Shia wa Akadhībuhum ala Ahl al-Bayt): Analyzes what the author characterizes as fabrications and mythologies falsely ascribed to the Ahl al-Bayt in Shi'i collections .
  4. Part Four (al-Shia wa Ihanatuhum Ahl al-Bayt): Documents statements from classical Shi'i works that cast aspersions on members of the Prophetic household and the descendants of Ali ibn Abi Talib, including al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, Aqil ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet's daughters, and several Alid figures, alongside historical reports of the imams reproaching those who claimed allegiance to them .

Zaheer explicitly adopted a methodology of relying exclusively on Shi'i primary sources—including major works of hadith, biographical evaluation (rijal), and history—citing exact volume and page numbers without drawing upon Sunni literature for evidence or inference, in order to ground his critique entirely within Shi'i source material .

Publication

The work was published in Arabic by Idarat Turjuman al-Sunnah in Lahore, with its third edition appearing in 1403 AH .
