al-Shadha al-Fayyah min Ulum Ibn al-Salah (The Fragrant Scent from the Disciplines of Ibn al-Salah) is a treatise on hadith terminology by the Shafi'i jurist Burhan al-Din al-Abnasi (c. 725–802 AH / 1325–1399 CE), structured as a commentary and expansion on Ma'rifat Anwa' 'Ilm al-Hadith by Ibn al-Salah (d. 643 AH / 1245 CE) .
Purpose and Content
Al-Abnasi considered Ibn al-Salah's manual to be the finest work written in the discipline of hadith sciences . In al-Shadha al-Fayyah, he systematically covered all sixty-five categories (anwa') of hadith disciplines defined by Ibn al-Salah without omitting any . For each category, he cited Ibn al-Salah's text verbatim before providing annotations, hadith-related points of benefit (fawa'id hadithiyyah), and essential jurisprudential rulings (muhimmat fiqhiyyah) drawn from various authorities .
Method and Sources
The book is categorized among the critical annotations and glosses (nukat) on Ibn al-Salah's work because al-Abnasi included original additions and insights of his own . His primary source for critical remarks and expansions was his contemporary and associate Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi (d. 806 AH / 1404 CE), drawing directly on al-Iraqi's al-Taqyid wa-al-Idah (his critical notes on Ibn al-Salah), his commentary on his own Alfiyyah in hadith, and other writings .
Manuscripts and Publication
Manuscripts of al-Shadha al-Fayyah include a copy preserved in the Alexandria Municipal Library (al-Baladiyyah) under catalog number N 4452 - J . The text was edited by Salah Fathi Halal and published in Riyadh by Maktabat al-Rushd in 1418 AH / 1998 CE .
