al-Sabil ila Manhaj Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jamaa (The Path to the Methodology of the People of the Sunna and the Community) is a treatise on Salafi methodology and creed written by the Syrian author and preacher Adnan al-Arur.
Composition and Purpose
Adnan al-Arur composed the work at the request of a colleague for the third conference of the Quran and Sunnah Society in North America. Dated in Riyadh on the 1st of Rabiʿ al-Thani 1410 AH (November 1989 CE), the treatise was issued through the scientific research department of Dar al-Raya. The author noted in the preface that he drafted the booklet under severe time constraints and largely from memory, seeking to provide beginners with a clear guide outlining the method of the "Victorious Sect" (al-taʾifa al-mansura) amidst contemporary ideological confusion, doctrinal disputes, and sectarian fragmentation.
Content and Themes
The treatise is structured around answering three foundational questions for religious inquiry: "What is the path (al-sabil)?", "What is salvation (al-najat)?", and "What is the guarantee (al-daman)?"
Al-Arur begins by diagnosing the state of the contemporary Islamic world, describing intellectual chaos, methodological divergence, and mutual recrimination among practicing groups as major obstacles to reform. He contrasts Islamic guidance with secular systems such as communism and Western materialism, arguing that non-Islamic ideologies suffer from severe moral and spiritual decay.
The core thesis of the book emphasizes that authentic religious revival requires strict adherence (ittibaʿ) to the scriptural texts of the Quran and the Sunna according to the understanding of the early generations (al-salaf al-salih), rather than intellectual innovation (ibtidaʿ), personal opinion, or emotional reaction.
The booklet served as the foundation for a broader multi-part series published under the general title al-Sabil ila Manhaj al-Taʾifa al-Mansura, which includes separate treatises such as al-Tih wa al-Makhraj (The Lostness and the Way Out), Siraʿ al-Fikr wa al-Ittibaʿ (The Conflict Between Thought and Adherence), and Sifat al-Taʾifa al-Mansura wa Mafahimuha (Characteristics and Concepts of the Victorious Sect).
Reception
The methodological formulations presented in the work were discussed among contemporary scholars. In Shaʿban 1414 AH (January 1994 CE), the traditionist Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani dedicated a recorded session, titled "A Reading of Kitab al-Sabil by Shaykh Adnan Arʿur," to examining questions arising from the text concerning the division of Islamic sciences into creed (ʿaqida), methodology (manhaj), and law (shariʿa), as well as the rules governing the attribution of religious innovation (tabdiʿ).
