al-Ruwat ʿan Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj (The Narrators from Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj) is a short hadith tract (juzʾ) compiled by the Hanbali traditionist and hadith master Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi (569–643 AH / 1173–1243 CE), documenting narrators who transmitted directly from Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj .

Purpose and Method

The tract was compiled to record the narrations that reached Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi through direct students and transmitters of Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj . Rather than attempting an exhaustive biographical dictionary of all who studied under Muslim, al-Maqdisi restricted the work to ten transmitters from whom he possessed unbroken chains of transmission (isnad) connecting back to Muslim . Under each narrator's entry, he records a prophetic tradition or historical report with his full chain through that narrator from Muslim .

Contents and Structure

The tract consists of ten numbered entries for the following narrators, ordered as follows:

  1. Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan (known as Ibn al-Sharqi) .
  2. Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn ʿAli ibn Hasnawayh al-Muqriʾ .
  3. Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn Hamdun al-Aʿmashi, from whom he transmits Muslim's praise of al-Bukhari .
  4. Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sufyan al-Zahid al-Naysaburi, the primary transmitter of Sahih Muslim .
  5. ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Yasin .
  6. Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Daghuli .
  7. Abu ʿIsa Muhammad ibn ʿIsa ibn Sawrah al-Tirmidhi, the author of the Sunan .
  8. Abu ʿAbd Allah Muhammad ibn Makhlad ibn Hafs al-Duri al-ʿAttar .
  9. Abu Hatim Makki ibn ʿAbdan ibn Muhammad .
  10. Abu ʿAwanah Yaʿqub ibn Ishaq al-Isfarayini, the author of the Mustakhraj on Muslim .

Transmission and Publication

The work was transmitted directly from Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi by his nephew through marriage, the Hanbali chief judge Abu al-Fadl Sulayman ibn Hamza al-Maqdisi (d. 715 AH) . It has been published in modern print by Dar Ibn Hazm, edited by ʿAbd Allah al-Kandari and Hadi al-Marri alongside al-Dhahabi's biographical tract on Muslim and the transmitters of his Sahih .
