al-Ruwat al-Arbaat Ashar (Arabic: الرواة الأربعة عشر, lit. 'The Fourteen Transmitters') is a specialized hadith treatise (juzʾ) compiled by the Hanbali traditionist and historian Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi (569–643 AH / 1173–1245 CE) .
Subject and Content
The work gathers hadiths transmitted through fourteen traditionists named Abd Allah (the ʿAbādilah), primarily belonging to the generation of al-Bukhari, Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, or their teachers . Methodologically, the work functions akin to a mustakhraj on the collections of al-Bukhari and Muslim: al-Maqdisi narrates each report through his own continuous chains of transmission (asānīd) leading up to one of these fourteen transmitters, noting its corresponding extraction in the canonical collections .
The fourteen transmitters enumerated at the beginning of the text are:
- Abd Allah al-Qaʿnabi (Abd Allah ibn Maslama al-Qa'nabi)
- Ibn Asmaʾ
- Abu Maʿmar
- al-Humaydi
- Abd Allah ibn Yusuf
- al-Muqriʾ
- Abd Allah ibn Umar ibn Aban
- Abd Allah ibn Jaʿfar al-Barmaki
- Abd Allah ibn Awn
- al-Samarqandi
- al-Ashajj
- Ibn al-Rumi
- Abd Allah ibn Amir ibn Zurara
- Abd Allah ibn Hashim
Manuscript Transmission
A manuscript of the work—also titled al-Riwayah ʿan Arbaʿat ʿAshar Rawiyan min al-ʿAbadilah—is preserved in the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus among the Majāmiʿ ʿUmariyya (MS 106, item 10, folios 110–135) . The manuscript contains portions written in the author's own hand, along with an audition certificate (samāʿ) registered before him dated to 637 AH .
