al-Raheeq al-Makhtum (The Sealed Nectar) is a biography of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ written in Arabic by the Indian scholar Safi al-Rahman al-Mubarakfuri (d. 1427 AH / 2006 CE) .

Background and Composition

The book was authored for an international competition on the prophetic biography organized by the Muslim World League based in Mecca . The competition was announced following the First Islamic Conference on the Prophet's Seerah, held in Pakistan in Rabi' al-Awwal 1396 AH (1976 CE) . A total of 171 submissions were entered across several languages: 84 in Arabic, 64 in Urdu, 21 in English, one in French, and one in Hausa .

Al-Mubarakfuri submitted his treatise from Jamia Salafiyya in Benares, completing it on 24 Rajab 1396 AH (23 July 1976 CE) . A committee of scholars awarded the book first place, along with a monetary prize of 50,000 Saudi riyals . The results were announced at the First Asian Islamic Conference in Karachi in Sha'ban 1398 AH, and the awards were distributed in Mecca on 12 Rabi' al-Awwal 1399 AH under Prince Saud ibn Abd al-Muhsin . The Muslim World League subsequently published the winning monograph and arranged for its dissemination and translation into multiple languages .

Method and Scope

Al-Mubarakfuri adopted a medium-length format, intentionally avoiding tedious detail and excessive brevity . When encountering significant chronological discrepancies or conflicting particulars across early historical sources, he engaged in critical examination (tahqiq) to determine the most sound report, placing the preferred conclusion directly into the narrative text while omitting lengthy arguments and proofs except where necessary to address prevailing misconceptions .

The work begins with an overview of the geography, lineages, and political governance of pre-Islamic Arabia—including regional rule in Yemen, al-Hira, the Levant, and the Hijaz—as well as the religious, economic, and moral state of Jahiliyyah society . It proceeds to trace the lineage and household of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, his birth, early upbringing, and the forty years prior to his commission . The book follows the chronological development of prophetic mission through the early secret and public preaching in Mecca, the opposition of Quraysh, the emigrations to Abyssinia, the journey to al-Ta'if, the Isra and Mi'raj, and the migration (hijra) to Medina . It covers the founding of the Medinan community, military expeditions, key treaties, the Conquest of Mecca, the Year of Delegations, the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Prophet's final illness and death, and concludes with a description of his household, physical attributes, and moral character .

Reception and Commentary

al-Raheeq al-Makhtum became widely recognized and distributed throughout the Muslim world, and was adopted as a primary curriculum text for prophetic biography across numerous Islamic institutes, universities, and instructional courses . Commentators highlighted its accessible phrasing and coherent narrative style .

The book has also been the subject of dedicated analytical commentaries, most notably al-Ta'liq 'ala al-Rahiq al-Makhtum by Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Mallah, which examines the historical authenticity of certain narrations and compiles comparative textual notes between early and revised editions of the work .
