al-Radd ‘ala man yaqul al-Qur’an makhluq (Refutation of Whoever Says the Quran Is Created) is a theological epistle by the Baghdadi Hanbali jurist and hadith master Abu Bakr al-Najjad (253–348 AH / 867–960 CE), dedicated to upholding the traditionalist position that the Quran is the uncreated speech of God .

Content and Method

The work is arranged in the traditional manner of hadith compilations (tariqat al-muhaddithin), presenting chains of transmission (isnad) rather than speculative dialectical arguments . In it, al-Najjad gathers prophetic hadiths and statements from the early generations (salaf) and prominent imams to affirm the divine attribute of speech (kalam) for God and refute doctrines attributing createdness to the Quran . The text cites rulings and transmissions from early authorities—such as Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, Malik ibn Anas, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal—declaring the Quran to be God's uncreated speech and censuring dissenting theological views, particularly those associated with the Jahmiyya .

Transmission and Publication

The work was preserved and circulated as a dictated transmission (imla') delivered by al-Najjad . Its transmission line passed through students of al-Najjad such as Abu Tahir Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hasanun al-Qudsi and Abu Tahir ibn Abi Muslim al-Rasul, recorded across later hadith indices and bibliographies .

The text was edited by Rida' Allah Muhammad Idris and published by Maktabat al-Sahaba al-Islamiyya in Kuwait in 1400 AH (1980 CE) .
