al-Radd al-Jamil ala al-Mushakkikin fi al-Islam min al-Quran wa al-Tawrah wa al-Injil wa al-Ilm (The Gracious Rebuttal to Doubters of Islam from the Quran, Torah, Gospel, and Science) is an Islamic polemical and apologetic work by Abd al-Majid Hamid Subh, written to refute doubts and challenges raised against Islam through scriptural and rational argumentation .

Background and Composition

The composition of the work arose during the author's visit to the United States beginning on 21 December 1997, following an invitation from the board of directors of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Mosque in Brooklyn, New York City . During this stay, his longtime friend Hamid Nabawi presented him with a set of challenging questions compiled and distributed by Christian missionaries based in Canada . Subh observed that the missionaries built their challenges on partial knowledge coupled with bias, while some Muslim immigrants who attempted to counter them lacked formal scholarly grounding and presented counterproductive or inadequate answers . At Nabawi's request, Subh undertook writing a comprehensive refutation, completing the work in New York in January 1998 .

Structure and Contents

The book is structured into four primary sections :

  • First Section: Presents the Arabic translation of the questions posed by the Canadian missionaries, alongside minor linguistic refinements .
  • Second Section: Outlines the Quranic methodology, principles, objectives, and manners of theological debate (jadal), arguing that the missionaries failed to adhere to valid debating methods and merely recycled older arguments .
  • Third Section: Examines problematic aspects and vulnerabilities within the Christian scriptures and doctrines, asserting that these warranted greater scrutiny by the questioners .
  • Fourth Section: Provides detailed, point-by-point refutations and clarifications in response to each of the missionaries' assertions .

Publication and Critique

The work was published in a single volume by Dar al-Manara lil-Nashr wa al-Tawzi' wa al-Tarjama in Mansoura, Egypt, with a second edition appearing in 1424 AH / 2003 CE .

The book drew criticism from contemporary researcher Abd al-Muhsin al-Mutayri, who noted that Subh ventured into denying the concept of abrogation (naskh) in the Quran in an effort to deflect polemical attacks against the scriptural text, arguing that such denial was erroneous since abrogation is firmly established in Islamic scholarship .
