al-Rabi‘ min Fawa’id Abi ‘Uthman al-Buhayri (The Fourth Part of the Benefits of Abu ‘Uthman al-Buhayri) is a specialized hadith tract (juz’) containing selected narrations transmitted by the Persian traditionist Abu ‘Uthman al-Buhayri (364–451 AH / 974–1059 CE) .
Origin and Compilation
The work represents the fourth installment in a multi-part compilation of fawa’id (extracted hadith benefits) drawn directly from the personal audition notebooks and primary source materials (usul masmu‘at) of Abu ‘Uthman Sa‘id ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ja‘far al-Buhayri al-Naysaburi . Al-Buhayri was regarded as a trustworthy transmitter and a leading traditionist and authority of high chains (musnid) in Khurasan .
The selection and textual extraction (takhrij) of these traditions was executed for al-Buhayri by the scholar Abu Sa‘d Sa‘id ibn Muhammad al-Sha‘bi .
Transmission and Content
The collection records Prophetic hadiths and traditions preserved through al-Buhayri’s senior teachers across Khurasan, Iraq, and the Hijaz, such as Zahir ibn Ahmad al-Sarakhsi and Abu ‘Amr ibn Hamdan .
The primary line of transmission for this compilation stemmed from al-Buhayri through the traditionist Abu al-Qasim Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahhami, from whom it was subsequently transmitted and read by Abu al-Majd Zahir ibn Abi Tahir al-Thaqafi in Isfahan . The tract has served as a primary source for hadith documentation and chain verification (takhrij) in classical and contemporary hadith scholarship .
