Al-Qutuf al-Daniya fima infarada bihi al-Darimi an al-Thamaniya (The Close Fruits Concerning What al-Darimi Exclusively Reported Beyond the Eight [Books]) is a hadith collection compiled by Marzouq bin Hiyas al-Zahrani, dedicated to isolating and examining the exclusive narrations (infirādāt or zawāʾid) preserved in Musnad al-Darimi that do not appear in the other eight major hadith compilations .
Scope and Contents
The work focuses on identifying the narrations in Musnad al-Darimi—authored by Abu Muhammad al-Darimi—that are absent from the other eight primary collections of hadith: Sahih al-Bukhari by al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim by Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud by Abu Dawud, Sunan al-Tirmidhi by al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i by al-Nasa'i, Sunan Ibn Majah by Ibn Majah, Musnad Ahmad by Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Muwatta Malik by Malik ibn Anas .
Out of the total narrations in Musnad al-Darimi—stated as 3,578 narrations in one count and 3,738 including repetitions across 1,371 chapters in another—the author identified 1,508 hadiths and transmitted reports (āthār) that were uniquely recorded by al-Darimi over the other eight books .
Methodology
Al-Zahrani extracted each exclusive report, conducted a critical study of its chain of narration (isnād), provided source attribution (takhrīj), and graded its authenticity in light of the statements of classical hadith critics .
Among these exclusive reports, the author found numerous narrations that are sound (ṣaḥīḥ), sound through corroboration (ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrih), good in themselves (ḥasan li-dhātih), or good through corroboration (ḥasan li-ghayrih), alongside a limited number of chain-broken (mursal), severed (maqṭūʿ), and severely weak (ḍaʿīf jiddan) reports . He noted that weak transmissions in the collection are few, and narrators labeled by critics as abandoned (matrūk), objectionable (munkar), flimsy (wāhin), or fabricators do not exceed ten .
The author stated that he found no forged (mawḍūʿ) narrations among al-Darimi's exclusive reports, with the exception of two hadiths whose status was disputed among critics, some of whom judged them to be fabricated :
- مَن لم يمنعه عن الحج حاجة ظاهرة، أو سلطان جائر، أو مرض حابس، فمات ولم يحج فليمت إن شاء يهوديًا، وإن شاء نصرانيًا ("Whoever is not prevented from performing Hajj by an obvious necessity, an unjust ruler, or a confining illness, and dies without having performed Hajj, let him die if he wishes as a Jew or if he wishes as a Christian") .
- إذا وضع الطعام فاخلعوا نعالكم، فإنه أروح لأقدامكم ("When food is served, take off your sandals, for it is more comfortable for your feet") .
In his subsequent edition and commentary on Musnad al-Darimi, al-Zahrani referenced these exclusive entries in the footnotes using the abbreviation letter Tāʾ (ت:), followed by their specific entry numbers in Al-Qutuf al-Daniya .
Author's Corrections
In his commentary Sharh Musnad al-Darimi, al-Zahrani recorded certain corrections regarding the book's contents:
- He noted that the agreed-upon (muttafaq ʿalayh) hadith, مَا أَذِنَ اللَّهُ لِشَيْءٍ، كَمَا أَذِنَ لِنَبِيٍّ يَتَغَنَّى بِالْقُرْآنِ ("Allah does not listen to anything as He listens to a prophet chanting the Quran"), had been mistakenly included in Al-Qutuf al-Daniya due to an oversight during the filtration process, an error pointed out to him by his teacher Abd al-Muhsin al-Abbad .
- He also documented that a narration transmitted by Aisha regarding the Prophet ﷺ conversing with her after the two sunnah rakʿahs of Fajr was exclusive to al-Darimi but had been unintentionally omitted from Al-Qutuf al-Daniya .
