Al-Qudwa Mabadi wa Namadhij (Exemplarity: Principles and Models) is a treatise on Islamic propagation (da'wah), ethics, and pedagogy by the Saudi scholar and jurist Salih bin Abdullah bin Humayd . The work examines the concept of personal role modeling (al-qudwa), establishing its foundational principles and illustrating practical applications through historical and prophetic precedents .
Purpose and Concept
The author wrote the treatise to highlight righteous role modeling as one of the most effective and impactful methods of Islamic propagation, emphasizing that living practice must mirror preached ideals . The book defines al-qudwa and al-uswah as following and emulating an exemplar . It divides role modeling into two categories:
- Virtuous role modeling (al-qudwa al-hasanah): Emulating people of righteousness and virtue in noble deeds, truth, and justice, with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ serving as the primary exemplar whose words, actions, and character encompass all levels of emulation .
- Corrupt role modeling (al-qudwa al-sayyi'ah): Following corrupt paths and imitating misguided figures without evidence, as depicted in Quranic passages condemning the blind imitation of ancestral customs .
The work highlights that behavior leaves a deeper impression than speech alone, observing that Islam historically spread to distant lands through the visible conduct of righteous Muslims . It outlines several psychological and educational benefits of role models, including demonstrating that moral perfection is achievable within human capacity, communicating moral principles directly to people of varying intellectual abilities, and fostering internal motivation in students without external pressure . It also notes that followers scrutinize their leaders closely, referencing the resolve of Ahmad ibn Hanbal during the Mihna (Inquisition) over the creation of the Quran when warned by his contemporaries that multitude of people were waiting to record and follow his stance .
Foundations of Role Modeling
The book identifies three primary principles (usul) required of an exemplar:
- Personal Righteousness (al-Salah): Grounded in three pillars: sound faith (al-iman) in core Islamic beliefs and the realization of Tawhid; steadfast worship (al-'ibadah) by fulfilling obligatory and supererogatory acts while avoiding prohibitions; and genuine sincerity (al-ikhlas) for the sake of Allah alone .
- Good Character (Husn al-Khuluq): Encompassing interpersonal conduct organized around five major traits: truthfulness (al-sidq) in intent, speech, and deed; patience (al-sabr) through hardships and delays; universal mercy (al-rahmah) toward people and animals; humility (al-tawadu') by avoiding self-praise and attributing virtue to Allah; and gentleness (al-rifq) in dealing with audiences, particularly beginners and the unlearned, without overburdening or alienating them .
- Alignment of Words with Deeds (Muwafaqat al-Qawl al-'Amal): A strict warning against hypocrisy and ordering virtues that one fails to perform . However, the author clarifies that human imperfection does not prevent one from being emulated or from commanding good, citing Sa'id ibn Jubayr and al-Hasan al-Basri to argue that requiring total sinlessness would extinguish all moral guidance .
Practical Models from Prophetic Life
The concluding part of the treatise provides practical models (namadhij) from the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:
- The Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah: When the Companions initially hesitated to terminate their pilgrimage status, the Prophet ﷺ acted on the advice of Umm Salamah by slaughtering his sacrificial animal and shaving his head in their view, prompting immediate emulation across the entire camp .
- Clarifying Ambiguous Situations: The Prophet's ﷺ explicit clarification to two Ansari men when walking with his wife Safiyyah bint Huyayy at night, illustrating the duty of leaders and scholars to dispel suspicion and preserve trust .
- Courage and Steadfastness: The Prophet's ﷺ personal resolve during the Battle of Hunayn when other ranks retreated, and his immediate response during an alarm in Medina where he rode out alone to investigate and reassure the community .
- Promptness in Righteous Deeds: His haste following the afternoon prayer to distribute surplus charity without delay .
Publication
In addition to appearing as an independent treatise, the text was published in 1420 AH by Dar al-Andalus al-Khadra as part of Salih bin Humayd's collected volume of ten treatises titled Ma'alim fi Manhaj al-Da'wah (Landmarks in the Methodology of Propagation) . It is also cited in bibliographic literature under the title Mabadi wa Namadhij fi al-Qudwa .
