al-Qattara al-Nahwiyya ala al-Muqaddima al-Ajrumiyya (The Grammatical Droplet upon the Ajrumiyya Introduction) is a concise commentary on al-Ajrumiyya in Arabic grammar, authored by Hazem Khanfar.
Composition and Method
The author completed the preface to the work on 5 Safar 1441 AH (4 October 2019 CE), and a second corrected edition was issued in 1442 AH (2020 CE). In his introduction, Khanfar characterizes the commentary as a brief exposition kept free from complicated or obscure issues, aiming to present the essential distillation of grammatical science while rarely departing from the explicit topics of the base text. He adopted the blended style of commentary (al-sharh al-mamzuj), interweaving his explanatory text directly with the words of the original primer.
Structure and Contents
The book follows the arrangement of al-Ajrumiyya across its standard grammatical divisions, encompassing the following sections and chapters:
- Introductory Concepts: Opening with the author's preface (tawti'a), followed by types of speech (anwa' al-kalam), desinential inflection (bab al-i'rab), knowledge of inflectional signs (ma'rifat 'alamat al-i'rab), and a section classifying inflected words (al-mu'rabat).
- Verbal Inflections: The chapter on verbs (bab al-af'al).

- Accusative Nouns (Mansubat al-Asma'): Chapters covering the direct object (al-maf'ul bihi), the verbal noun (al-masdar), adverbs of time and place (zarf al-zaman wa-zarf al-makan), circumstantial qualifier (al-hal), specification (al-tamyiz), exception (al-istithna'), the absolute negation with la, vocative (al-munada), causal object (al-maf'ul min ajlihi), and accompaniment object (al-maf'ul ma'ahu).
