al-Qadar (The Divine Decree) is a classical compilation of hadith and theological reports on divine predestination by the hadith master and jurist Abu Bakr Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Firyabi (d. 301 AH / 913 CE) .
Scope and Contents
The work gathers transmitted traditions with full chains of narration (isnad) affirming divine foreknowledge, the preordainment of all events, God's creation of all actions, and the refutation of the Qadariyyah who denied divine decree . The reports record sayings of the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions such as Abdullah ibn Abbas and Abdullah ibn Umar, and early authorities including Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz and Muhammad ibn Sirin . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani described the work as a substantial compilation in one volume . It served as a source for later scholars of traditional creed, such as Abu Bakr al-Ajurri, who quoted extensive chains directly through al-Firyabi in Kitab al-Shari'a .
Transmission and Manuscripts
The book is arranged into three parts (ajza'), transmitted primarily through the recitation of al-Firyabi's student Abu Muhammad 'Ubayd Allah (also recorded as 'Abd Allah) ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Babawayh al-Mukharrimi (d. 376 AH) . From al-Mukharrimi, the text was narrated by Abu al-Qasim 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Ali al-Azaji, down to Abu Talib 'Abd al-Qadir ibn Muhammad ibn Yusuf, Yahya ibn As'ad ibn Bush, and the Syrian hadith scholar Yusuf ibn Khalil .
A surviving manuscript of the work exists within a composite codex bound alongside Kitab al-Qadar of Ibn Wahb, copied by the Hanafi scribe Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn 'Uthman al-Kalwatati, who completed its transcription on 18 Jumada al-Ula 786 AH . Another manuscript is preserved at the Islamic University of Madinah .
Editions
The work has been edited by 'Abd Allah ibn Hamad al-Mansur and published in a single volume by Adwa' al-Salaf in Riyadh in 1418 AH (1997 CE) .
