Kitab al-Nuzul (Arabic: كتاب النزول, The Book of Descent), also referred to as Ahadith al-Nuzul, is a monograph of prophetic traditions compiled by the hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) dedicated to gathering the transmission paths and narrations regarding the divine descent (nuzul) .

Subject and Content

The work compiles the various transmission paths (turuq) and narrations of the hadith al-nuzul, in which the Prophet ﷺ stated: ينزل ربنا تبارك وتعالى كل ليلة إلى السماء الدنيا حين يبقى ثلث الليل الآخر ("Our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, descends every night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains") . The book comprises ninety-six hadiths and non-prophetic reports (athar), the majority of which are also documented in the two Sahih collections of al-Bukhari and Muslim .

The narrations in the text are transmitted on the authority of multiple Companions, including Abu Hurayrah, Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, Ibn Mas'ud, Jubayr ibn Mut'im, Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, 'Amr ibn 'Abasah, Abu al-Darda', 'Uthman ibn Abi al-'As, Mu'adh ibn Jabal, and Umm Salamah .

Transmission and Attribution

The text opens with a chain of transmission through Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Baqi ibn al-Faraj al-Duri, reading to him in Safar 511 AH, who reported from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Malik ibn Bishran (in Rabi' al-Awwal 446 AH), who narrated it directly from al-Daraqutni . Later scholars cited the work and confirmed its attribution; Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani cited it in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib referencing al-Daraqutni's statements in his book on the traditions of al-nuzul, and Fuat Sezgin cataloged it in his history of Arabic literature (GAS) .

Manuscripts and Editions

A manuscript of the work is preserved in Istanbul, Turkey, within a collective volume (majmu') at the Revan Köşk library (MS 5/510), occupying nine folios and one page, with 33 lines per page .
