al-Nukat fi al-Quran al-Karim (Subtleties in the Noble Quran, also titled fi Maʿānī al-Qurʾān al-Karīm wa-Iʿrābih) is a treatise on Quranic meanings, grammatical analysis, and exegesis by the grammarian and philologist Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Faddal al-Mujashi'i (d. 479 AH / 1086 CE) .

Author and Background

The author, Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Faddal ibn Ali ibn Ghalib al-Mujashi'i al-Qayrawani, was a scholar of Arabic grammar, lexicography, literature, exegesis (tafsir), and biographical history (siyar), descended from the poet al-Farazdaq . Born in Hajar, he traveled extensively and taught in Baghdad before his death on 22 Rabi' al-Awwal 479 AH . Al-Mujashi'i composed several works dedicated to the Quran and Arabic linguistics, including extensive exegetical works such as Burhan al-Amidi and al-Iksir fi 'ilm al-tafsir .

Content and Method

The book focuses on elucidating the meanings (ma'ani) and grammatical parsing (i'rab) of the Quranic text, emphasizing fine semantic and interpretive nuances (nukat) . It incorporates surveys of the chronological classification of surahs and verses, differentiating between Meccan and Medinan revelations and noting exceptions within individual surahs alongside specific occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul) .

In his analysis, al-Mujashi'i draws on early authorities of exegesis and philology, citing reports attributed to Ibn Abbas through al-Suddi, the early commentator Muqatil ibn Sulayman, and the Basran grammarian al-Mubarrad (Muhammad ibn Yazid) . The discussions encompass lexical definitions, comparative semantic shades of divine names and attributes, and linguistic analysis of grammatical particles and interrogatives .

Publication

The work was edited by Abdullah Abd al-Qadir al-Tawil under the title al-Nukat fi al-Quran al-Karim (fi Ma'ani al-Quran al-Karim wa-I'rabih) and published in one volume by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah in Beirut in 1428 AH / 2007 CE .
