al-Nukat al-Shania fi Bayan al-Khilaf bayn Allah Taala wa al-Shia (The Heinous Points in Explaining the Disagreement Between God Almighty and the Shia) is a theological treatise by the Iraqi scholar Fasih al-Din al-Haydari (d. 1299 AH / 1881–1882 CE) examining Sunni–Shia doctrinal disputes through the lens of Quranic verses.

Composition and Purpose

The author, Ibrahim Fasih al-Din ibn Sibghat Allah al-Haydari al-Baghdadi, composed the work while residing in Basra in response to a request from individuals from Najd. He described the treatise as an unprecedented exposition of religious rulings and theological points wherein Shia doctrines diverge from the explicit statements of God in the Quran.

Structure and Contents

The text is arranged around a series of numbered doctrinal points (nukat), in each of which al-Haydari contrasts a Quranic proof-text with positions maintained in Shia theological literature:

  • Creation of Human Actions: Al-Haydari argues from verses such as خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ ("God created you and that which you do") that all human actions—both good and evil—are created by God through His divine will and power, whereas the servant possesses acquisition (kasb). He contrasts this with the Shia and Mu'tazilite doctrine that humans create their own actions, as well as beliefs regarding the Imams' agency over creation.
  • Status of the Prophet and the Imams: The author invokes وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ ("And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds") to affirm the unmatched superiority of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over all creation, rejecting claims of equality in virtue or the superiority of Ali ibn Abi Talib and the Twelve Imams over prophets and messengers.
  • The Caliphate and Companions: The treatise cites Quran 24:55 to establish the legitimacy of the succession of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs, Quran 48:16 to argue for the caliphate of Abu Bakr, and Quran 9:40 to affirm Abu Bakr's companionship in the cave.
  • The Prophet's Household: Al-Haydari uses Quran 33:6 to maintain that all of the Prophet's wives are the Mothers of the Believers, and Quran 33:59 to affirm that Zaynab bint Muhammad, Ruqayyah bint Muhammad, and Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad were the biological daughters of the Prophet alongside Fatimah al-Zahra.

Transmission and Editions

Manuscripts of the work are preserved in public collections, including the General Awqaf Library in Baghdad. The text was prepared for academic publication in a critical edition by Abd al-Aziz ibn Salih al-Mahmud.
