al-Mustadrak ala Mawsuat al-Tafsir al-Mathur (The Supplement to the Encyclopedia of Traditional Exegesis) is a collective scholarly supplement prepared by the Center for Quranic Studies and Information at the Imam al-Shatibi Institute in Jeddah to supplement and refine its parent work, Mawsuat al-Tafsir al-Mathur . The project was carried out under the general supervision of Nuh ibn Yahya al-Shehri and the scholarly supervision of Musaid ibn Sulayman al-Tayyar .
Background and Purpose
Following the publication of the 24-volume Mawsuat al-Tafsir al-Mathur in 1439 AH (2017 CE)—which compiled exegesis transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ, the Companions, the Successors (Tabiun), and their followers over a ten-year compilation period—the research team compiled al-Mustadrak as an evaluative supplement . Its aim was to incorporate exegetical reports from newly published source texts with transmission chains (asānīd), gather relevant material that had been missed during the original compilation, and replace readings taken from defective editions with superior, newly edited prints to rectify scribal errors, omissions, and misspellings (taṣḥīf and taḥrīf) .
Sources
The sources utilized in al-Mustadrak fall into three primary categories :
- Newly Published Isnad-Based Works: Works published after the initial compilation of the encyclopedia, including Tafsir Ibn Jurayj (edited by Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan Qaid, 1441 AH), Ahkam al-Quran by al-Shafii (edited by Abu Amir Abd Allah Sharaf al-Din al-Daghastani, 1441 AH), and the extant portion of the isnad-based Tafsir of Ibn Mardawayh (from Surah Qaf to Surah al-Nas, edited by Ala al-Din Muhammad Ismail) .
- Previously Omitted Early Exegetical Texts: Early exegeses containing isnad-based reports that were not incorporated into the original compilation, such as Tafsir al-Khamsimi'at Ayah by Muqatil ibn Sulayman (edited by Nash'at Salah al-Din al-Duri, 1429 AH / 2008 CE), Bahr al-Ulum by Abu al-Layth al-Samarqandi (edited by Umar ibn Gharama al-Amrawi, 1416 AH / 1996 CE), and al-Kifayah fi al-Tafsir by Ismail ibn Ahmad al-Hiri (published in 1440 AH in ten volumes) .
- Re-examined Works: Earlier sources whose supplementary material had initially been extracted from problematic prints, re-indexed against newer critical editions; these include Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim (Dar Ibn al-Jawzi edition, 1439 AH) and al-Kashf wa-l-Bayan by al-Thalabi (Dar Tafsir edition, 1436 AH) .
Methodology
al-Mustadrak arranged the supplemented traditions according to the sequence and structure of the Qur'anic text, following the general editing standards established in the parent encyclopedia . However, unlike the original work, it omitted the analytical commentaries of the five prominent exegesis scholars, as the narrations were largely parallel in meaning to material already analyzed in the main encyclopedia; the editors only provided contextual commentary when clarifying ambiguous reports or citing specific criticisms .
The inclusion of material was governed by explicit technical criteria across ten cases of potential addition :
- Complete additions where both the interpretation and the exegete were entirely absent from the encyclopedia were prioritized as the highest category of supplementation .
- Additional phrasing was included only if it provided qualification, clarification, or contrasting meaning .
- Reports attributing an existing interpretation to an additional early authority, teacher, or student were admitted systematically to ensure comprehensive attribution .
- Mere additions of transmission paths (ṭuruq) or source references (maṣādir) for already recorded reports were excluded, because exhaustive sourcing of every route was not part of the project's parameters .
