al-Mustadrak ala Majmu al-Fatawa (Supplement to the Compendium of Legal Rulings) is a five-volume collection of legal rulings, treatises, and scholarly choices of the Hanbali jurist and theologian Ibn Taymiyya (661–728 AH / 1263–1328 CE), compiled and arranged by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim (d. 1421 AH) .
Background and Purpose
The work was created as a direct supplement to the thirty-seven-volume compendium Majmu al-Fatawa, which had been gathered and arranged by the compiler's father, Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Qasim, with the compiler's assistance . After completing the general index for Majmu al-Fatawa and editing other collections, Muhammad ibn Qasim sought to gather additional texts and verdicts of Ibn Taymiyya that were omitted from the original thirty-five textual volumes . The completed compilation was published at his own expense in 1418 AH (1997 CE) .
Sources and Scope
To verify that the material was not already present in the original collection, the compiler cross-referenced prospective texts against the two-volume general index of Majmu al-Fatawa and consulted the thematic chapters where the topics would have appeared .
The compilation contains more than two thousand issues (mas'ala) drawn from manuscripts and classic Hanbali reference works :
- Autograph manuscripts: Twelve short treatises written in Ibn Taymiyya's own hand spanning thirty pages, preserved at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus .
- Direct abridgments: 257 issues from Mukhtasar al-Fatawa al-Misriyya by Badr al-Din al-Ba'li, and 637 issues from al-Ikhtiyarat al-Fiqhiyya compiled by Ala al-Din Ali ibn Muhammad al-Ba'li .
- Works of disciples and later scholars: 126 issues transmitted across twenty-four works of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya; 293 issues from Kitab al-Furu and 81 issues from al-Adab al-Shar'iyya, both by Ibn Muflih; 329 issues from al-Insaf by Ala al-Din al-Mardawi; 282 issues authored by Ibn Taymiyya within the collaborative family treatise al-Musawwada fi Usul al-Fiqh; and 15 issues from al-Zarkashi's commentary on Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi .
Roughly two hundred of the included issues had an existing basis in Majmu al-Fatawa but were incorporated because the newly found versions contained supplementary details, clarifications, or differing redactions . The compiler also incorporated passages reflecting Ibn Taymiyya's personal virtues and character .
