Al-Musaid ala Tashil al-Fawaid (al-Musāʿid ʿalā Tashīl al-Fawāʾid) is an Arabic grammatical commentary composed by the Shafi'i scholar and grammarian Ibn Aqil (698–769 AH / 1298–1367 CE) on the grammatical treatise Tashil al-Fawaid wa-Takmil al-Maqasid by Ibn Malik (d. 672 AH / 1274 CE).
Background and Methodology
Ibn Aqil composed the work as an abridged commentary (taʿlīq mukhtaṣar) designed to elucidate the concise and intricate grammatical rules compiled in Ibn Malik's Tashīl al-Fawāʾid. In his introduction, Ibn Aqil states that his purpose was to facilitate the capture of elusive issues, extract the core benefits of the original work, and clarify its objectives.
Structurally, Ibn Aqil blended his explanatory remarks directly into Ibn Malik's base text so that the commentary and the original read continuously as a unified work, employing circular separation markers (hayʾa dawwārah) in the manuscript to distinguish between the two. It forms one of Ibn Aqil's principal contributions to Arabic linguistic scholarship alongside his commentary on Ibn Malik's Alfiyyah.
Publication
The work was critically edited by Dr. Muhammad Kamil Barakat and published under the sponsorship of the Center for Scientific Research and Islamic Heritage at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca, as well as issued in editions by Dar al-Fikr in Damascus and Dar al-Madani in Jeddah.
