al-Muqni fi Ulum al-Hadith (The Convincing Work on the Sciences of Hadith) is a treatise on Hadith methodology and terminology by the Egyptian Shafi'i scholar Ibn al-Mulaqqin (723–804 AH / 1323–1404 CE) . It was composed as an abridgment and critical expansion of the foundational work on Hadith disciplines by Ibn al-Salah .

Composition and Structure

Ibn al-Mulaqqin began writing the work in 749 AH and completed it in 759 AH, as recorded in his work al-Badr al-Munir . A manuscript preserved in Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyyah notes a transcription completed in Cairo in 791 AH .

In his preface, Ibn al-Mulaqqin explains that after surveying earlier compilations on Hadith sciences by scholars such as al-Tirmidhi, al-Hakim, and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, he regarded Ibn al-Salah's treatise as the most comprehensive synthesis in the field . He set out to summarize, clarify, and refine Ibn al-Salah's work while adding substantial commentary and supplementary points not easily accessible in standard references . The book follows the structure of Ibn al-Salah's original text, organizing its discussions into sixty-five distinct categories of Hadith science .

Reception and Influence

The work was referenced and cited by later scholars of Hadith. Izz al-Din Ibn Jama'ah (d. 819 AH) stated in his own work on Ibn al-Salah that Ibn al-Mulaqqin had abridged and commented on Ibn al-Salah in al-Muqni fi Ulum al-Hadith . The book was also documented by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in al-Majma al-Muassas, Taqi al-Din Ibn Fahd in Dhayl al-Tadhkirah, Ibn Qadi Shuhbah in Tabaqat al-Shafiiyyah, al-Suyuti in Tabaqat al-Huffaz, and al-Shawkani in al-Badr al-Tali . Al-Sakhawi recorded examining a single-volume copy of the work . Ibn al-Mulaqqin himself frequently cross-referenced al-Muqni throughout his major commentary, al-Tawdih li-Sharh al-Jami al-Sahih .

Ibn al-Mulaqqin later produced an epitome of al-Muqni titled al-Tadhkirah fi Ulum al-Hadith, a concise manual spanning a single gathering (kurrasah), which was subsequently explained by al-Sakhawi in his commentary al-Tawdih al-Abhar .

Modern Publication

al-Muqni fi Ulum al-Hadith was edited by Abd Allah ibn Yusuf al-Juday and published in a single volume (822 pages) by Dar Fawwaz in al-Ahsa in 1413 AH (1992 CE) .
