al-Muqni fi Fiqh al-Imam Ahmad (The Satisfying Book on the Jurisprudence of Imam Ahmad), commonly known as al-Muqni‘, is an intermediate manual of Hanbali jurisprudence authored by the Palestinian-Damascene jurist Ibn Qudama (541–620 AH / 1147–1223 CE) .

Purpose and Pedagogical Scope

Ibn Qudama designed al-Muqni‘ as the second stage in a graded four-tier curriculum of legal education within the Hanbali school:

  1. ‘Umdat al-Fiqh, a primer restricted to a single transmitted position for absolute beginners .
  2. al-Muqni‘, a text for advancing students presenting internal variant transmissions without exhaustive textual proofs to train legal acumen .
  3. al-Kafi fi Fiqh al-Imam Ahmad, an intermediate work incorporating textual evidence to introduce the methodology of legal reasoning (ijtihad) within the madhhab .
  4. al-Mughni, an advanced reference work documenting high-level comparative jurisprudence across all major schools of Islamic law .

In the introduction to al-Muqni‘, the author states that he compiled and arranged the work according to the madhhab of Ahmad ibn Hanbal, positioning it between brevity and length while omitting scriptural proofs (dalil) and legal rationales (ta‘lil) to keep its volume concise, facilitate memorization and understanding, and satisfy the needs of students .

Content and Method

The book follows standard juristic divisions, beginning with acts of worship (‘ibadat), followed by financial and commercial contracts (mu‘amalat), marriage and divorce (ankihah wa-talaq), torts and prescribed penalties (jinayat wa-hudud), and ending with judicial procedures and testimonies (aqdiyah wa-shahadat) .

A primary characteristic of al-Muqni‘ is its documentation of differing internal reports from Ahmad ibn Hanbal (riwayatan) and divergent interpretations among his associates (wajhan or ihtimalan) without decisively determining which view is preponderant (itlaq al-khilaf) . Occasionally, Ibn Qudama indicates a preferred view using phrases like "and the first is more sound" (wa-al-awwal asahh) or "according to the more sound of the two views" (fi asahh al-wajhayn), while also noting the unique opinions of early authorities such as al-Qadi Abu Ya'la and Abu al-Khattab al-Kalwadhani .

Reception and Scholarly Impact

al-Muqni‘ achieved widespread acceptance and served as the primary textbook for Hanbali instruction in Syria, Egypt, and neighboring regions for centuries, acquiring among later scholars a central status comparable to that held by Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi among earlier authorities .

Because Ibn Qudama cited multiple opinions without resolving them, later jurists produced numerous commentaries, linguistic expositions, and critical redactions to identify the relied-upon position (al-mu‘tamad) :

  • Commentaries:
    • al-Sharh al-Kabir (also titled al-Shafi), written by the author's nephew Shams al-Din Ibn Qudama (d. 682 AH), who drew extensively upon al-Mughni and supplied scriptural evidence and secondary branches .
    • al-Mumti‘ fi Sharh al-Muqni‘, by Zayn al-Din Ibn al-Manja (d. 695 AH), which provided phrase-by-phrase commentary with rational and textual proofs .
    • al-Mubdi‘ fi Sharh al-Muqni‘, by Burhan al-Din Ibrahim ibn Muflih (d. 884 AH), which synthesized the narrations and opinions from earlier references .
    • Kifayat al-Mustanqi‘ li-Adillat al-Muqni‘, by Abu al-Mahasin Yusuf ibn Muhammad al-Maqdisi (d. 719 AH) .
    • Commentaries by Sa'd al-Din Mas'ud al-Harithi (d. 711 AH) and 'Izz al-Din Muhammad ibn 'Ali al-Maqdisi (d. 820 AH) .
  • Lexical analysis:
    • al-Muttli‘ ‘ala Alfaz al-Muqni‘, by Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Abi al-Fath al-Ba'li (d. 709 AH), explaining the legal and philological vocabulary used in the text .
  • Redactions and Verifications:
    • Ala' al-Din al-Mardawi (d. 885 AH) composed al-Insaf fi Ma‘rifat al-Rajih min al-Khilaf to establish the preponderant and practiced ruling on every unresolved issue in al-Muqni‘, as well as an abridged redaction titled al-Tanqih al-Mushbi‘ fi Tahrir Ahkam al-Muqni‘ .
  • Abridgments and Compilations:
    • Musa al-Hajjawi (d. 968 AH) abridged it in Zad al-Mustaqni‘ fi Ikhtisar al-Muqni‘, restricting the text to the school's single relied-upon ruling .
    • Ibn al-Najjar al-Futuhi (d. 972 AH) combined the rulings of al-Muqni‘ and al-Mardawi's al-Tanqih al-Mushbi‘ with additional points in Muntaha al-Iradat .
    • Shihab al-Din al-Shuwayki (d. 939 AH) compiled al-Tawdih fi al-Jam‘ bayn al-Muqni‘ wa-al-Tanqih .

Editions

The work has been edited and published in various formats, including an edition edited by Mahmud al-Arna’ut and Yasin Mahmud al-Khatib (with a preface by ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Arna’ut) published by Maktabat al-Sawadi , and a combined 31-volume edition comprising al-Muqni‘, al-Sharh al-Kabir, and al-Insaf, edited by Abdullah bin Abdul Mohsen Al Turki and published by Dar Hijr .
