al-Muqarrar ‘ala Abwab al-Muharrar (Arabic: المقرر على أبواب المحرر) is a compendium of legal hadiths (ahadith al-ahkam) compiled by the Hanbali jurist Jamal al-Din Abu al-Abbas Yusuf ibn Majid ibn Abi al-Majd al-Maqdisi (d. 783 AH / 1381 CE) . The work arranges evidentiary prophetic traditions according to the chapter headings of al-Muharrar, a legal manual authored by Majd al-Din Abu al-Barakat Ibn Taymiyya (d. 652 AH / 1254 CE) .
Background and Purpose
Majd al-Din Ibn Taymiyya's al-Muharrar served as a concise reference manual for Hanbali jurisprudence, summarizing legal positions and rulings while omitting textual proofs and legal reasoning . To provide the scriptural evidence underpinning these rulings, Yusuf ibn Majid compiled al-Muqarrar ‘ala Abwab al-Muharrar, supplying relevant hadiths under each corresponding legal chapter . This format parallels other Hanbali legal hadith collections arranged along the chapter structures of standard texts, such as Ibn Ubaydan's al-Muttali‘ and Yusuf al-Mardawi's al-Intisar .
The author, Yusuf ibn Majid ibn Abi al-Majd al-Mardawi al-Maqdisi, was an active Hanbali scholar and mufti who studied under teachers such as Ahmad ibn Abi Talib al-Hajjar, Ibn al-Radi, al-Sharaf ibn al-Hafiz, and Ibn al-Shahnah, and was heavily devoted to the legal teachings and fatwas of Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya .
Methodology and Structure
In his introduction, Yusuf ibn Majid outlines his structural and editorial methodology :
- Attribution conventions: Hadiths recorded in the canonical collections of al-Bukhari and Muslim are cited without an explicit designation, whereas narrations from other sources are explicitly attributed to their compilers . When he uses the designation "the five" (al-khamsah), it refers collectively to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal and the compilers of the Four Sunan (Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah) .
- Arrangement of narrations: When citing a tradition through a specific Companion, he groups all related narrations from that same Companion within the chapter consecutively, aiming for brevity and ease of memorization for students .
- Transmitter criticism: The author occasionally incorporates brief evaluations concerning transmitter reliability (al-jarh wa-l-ta‘dil) and rulings on the authenticity of specific chains of transmission .
