al-Muntaqa min Masmuat Marw (The Selection from What Was Heard in Merv) is a hadith compilation by the Damascene Hanbali traditionist Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi (569–643 AH / 1173–1245 CE), gathering selected prophetic traditions, chains of narration, and reports he recorded during his scholarly journey to Merv in Khurasan .

Background and Composition

Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi traveled across several major centers of learning in the Islamic East to collect hadith . After traveling from Nishapur, he entered the city of Merv in the first ten days of Dhu al-Qidah 608 AH, where he resided for approximately two years . During his stay, he studied extensively under local scholars, beginning immediately upon arrival; his auditions with his primary teacher there, Abu al-Muzaffar Abd al-Rahim ibn Abd al-Karim al-Samani (d. 617 AH), commenced on 6 Dhu al-Qidah 608 AH . From al-Samani, he read and heard numerous classical works, including Musnad Abi Awanah, Ibn Yunus's al-Muntakhab min Tarikh al-Misriyyin, al-Sahmi's Tarikh Jurjan, al-Nasai's al-Sunan, Ibn al-Mubarak's al-Riqaq, and Ahmad ibn Sayyar's Tarikh Marw .

Contents and Scope

The compilation consists of a selection (muntaqa) of narrations transmitted through the chains of transmission that al-Maqdisi received in Merv, including traditions that his teachers had previously heard in cities such as Bukhara . In addition to prophetic hadiths and their associated chains of transmission (isnad), the text incorporates historical reports and poetic verses that his shaykhs recited to him, such as verses transmitted through Abu al-Muzaffar al-Samani from Mahmud ibn Ali al-Nasafi .

Manuscripts and Publication

A manuscript copy of the work is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under collection number 344 (hadith section) . The text was edited, verified, and published under the title al-Muntaqa min Masmuat al-Diya al-Maqdisi bi-Marw by Abu Abd Allah Umar ibn Bassam ibn al-Sadiq, based on a manuscript facsimile provided by Mashhur ibn Hasan Al Salman, with supervision by Dr. Muhammad Muhammadi Nuristani, and issued by the Kuwaiti General Authority for Printing and Publishing the Holy Quran and Sunnah .
