al-Muntaqa min Masmu'at al-Diya al-Maqdisi bi Marw (The Selection from Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi's Hadith Hearings in Merv) is a hadith compilation compiled by the Damascene Hanbali traditionist Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi (569–643 AH / 1174–1245 CE), recording select narrations he personally received during his scholarly journey to the Khurasanian city of Marw .
Background and Purpose
During his extensive travels in the Islamic East in pursuit of hadith, Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi journeyed through Iraq, Persia, and Khurasan, stopping in major centers of learning such as Baghdad, Isfahan, Nishapur, Herat, and Marw . In Marw, he studied under local scholars and compiled selections (muntaqa) from the hadith collections, notebooks, and transmission sessions (masmu'at) he attended there, preserving elevated and rare chains of narration from the region .
Content and Transmission
The work preserves prophetic traditions and scholarly reports transmitted through Khurasanian isnads, notably through members of the prominent Sam'ani family of Marw . Among the primary authorities from whom Diya al-Din recorded narrations in Marw was Abu al-Muzaffar Abd al-Rahim ibn Abd al-Karim al-Sam'ani, as well as transmissions deriving from the earlier jurist and traditionist Abu al-Muzaffar Mansur ibn Muhammad al-Sam'ani . The text also includes narrations traced back to early traditionists such as Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ammar ibn Wara, Abu Ja'far ibn Duhaym al-Shaybani, Ibn Bamuwayh al-Asbahani, and others . Later hadith scholars, including Ibn al-Mubarrad, cited narrations from this compilation in their own cross-referencing and hadith extraction works .
Manuscript and Publication
A primary manuscript of the work has been preserved in the collection of the Al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under shelfmark Hadith 344 . The manuscript bears historical transmission and audition notes (sama'at), as well as endowment inscriptions indicating its dedication as an inalienable mortmain property (waqf) by Diya al-Din al-Maqdisi himself to his Madrasa al-Diya'iyya on the slopes of Mount Qasyun in Damascus .
The work was edited and published for the first time by Abu Abd Allah Umar ibn Bassam ibn al-Sadiq, issued by the General Authority for the Care of Printing and Publishing the Holy Quran, the Sunnah, and Their Sciences in Kuwait .
