al-Muntaqa min Fatawa al-Aimma al-Alam (The Selection from the Fatwas of the Prominent Imams) is a contemporary Arabic compendium of Islamic legal opinions and religious rulings compiled by Abd al-Rahman al-Humayzi . The work focuses on essential matters of Islamic creed (aqidah) and jurisprudence (fiqh) that Muslims frequently encounter in everyday life .
Sources and Methodology
The compiler extracted the material in the book from dozens of volumes containing the fatwas of prominent contemporary scholars . Its contents draw upon the legal rulings of institutions and scholars such as the Saudi Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta (al-Lajnah al-Da'imah) and Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sa'di . The rulings are arranged in a question-and-answer format to facilitate quick comprehension and ease practical application for general readers .
In his preface, al-Humayzi noted that he followed the tradition of earlier scholars who produced focused selections (muntaqa) of high-priority traditions and rulings, citing classical examples such as al-Muntaqa min Amal al-Yawm wa-al-Layla by al-Nasa'i, al-Muntaqa min al-Sunan al-Musnada by Ibn al-Jarud, and al-Muntaqa min Akhbar al-Mustafa by Majd al-Din Ibn Taymiyyah .
Purpose and Practical Use
The anthology was compiled to connect lay Muslims and youth with recognized senior scholars, promote religious literacy, and counter ignorance regarding basic Islamic obligations . The author offered suggestions for using the text in daily communal and familial practice:
- Families are encouraged to read and discuss one to three fatwas daily at home to foster learning and family harmony .
- Mosque imams are encouraged to read a single concise ruling to their congregations daily following the evening (Isha) prayer, allowing maximum attendance without imposing lengthy sessions on worshippers .
Reception and Publication
The work was introduced and endorsed in a written foreword dated 18 Muharram 1442 AH by Muhammad ibn Hasan Al al-Shaykh, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars and the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta, who praised its selection and question-and-answer methodology .
The first edition was published in Riyadh by Dar Tayyibat al-Khadra' (1442 AH / 2021 CE) in a single volume comprising 471 pages, cataloged under legal rulings and Hanbali jurisprudence .
