al-Muntakhab min Ilal al-Khallal (Selections from al-Khallal’s Hadith Defects) is a specialized work on hidden defects in prophetic traditions (‘ilal al-hadith) compiled by the Hanbali jurist and scholar Ibn Qudama (541–620 AH / 1147–1223 CE) . It represents an abridgment and curated selection from the extensive, multi-volume Kitab al-Ilal compiled by Abu Bakr al-Khallal (d. 311 AH / 923 CE) .

Background and Transmission

Abu Bakr al-Khallal gathered the critical verdicts and legal opinions of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal from his direct students across various regions, compiling them into comprehensive reference works, including his large Kitab al-Ilal . Later biographical and bibliographical authorities, such as al-Dhahabi and Ibn Rajab, recorded Ibn Qudama’s selection under the title Mukhtasar al-Ilal lil-Khallal, with Ibn Rajab noting that Ibn Qudama's complete abridgment constituted a sizable single volume .

Contents and Structure

The core material of the work consists of transmitted statements and critical evaluations by Ahmad ibn Hanbal regarding defective narrations, their causes of weakness, and commentary on transmitter evaluation and disparagement (al-jarh wa-al-ta‘dil) .

The surviving text published under this title comprises parts ten and eleven of Ibn Qudama's selection from al-Khallal's original work . Attached to the end of the text is a supplementary section that examines the biographical tiers (tabaqat) of the students and associates of three major early authorities: Sufyan al-Thawri, al-A‘mash, and Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i .

Publication

The work was edited by Tariq ibn Awad Allah ibn Muhammad and published in a single volume by Dar al-Rayah in Riyadh (1419 AH / 1998 CE) .
