al-Mulhaq al-Tabi lil-Badr al-Tali bi-Mahasin man Bad al-Qarn al-Sabi ("The Supplementary Appendix to al-Badr al-Tali' on the Virtues of Those After the Seventh Century") is a biographical dictionary by the Yemeni historian Muhammad Zabara (d. 1381 AH / 1961 CE) . It serves as an appendix to al-Badr al-Tali bi-Mahasin man Bad al-Qarn al-Sabi by Muhammad ibn Ali al-Shawkani (d. 1250 AH / 1834 CE), supplying biographical entries for notable Yemeni figures whom al-Shawkani did not record .
Composition and Scope
Zabara compiled the work during his stay in Cairo when al-Shawkani's biographical dictionary was being prepared for publication, intending it to accompany the printed edition . The text contains concise biographical notices for 440 prominent figures from Yemen active between the end of the seventh century AH and the middle of the twelfth century AH .
Zabara explicitly noted in his preface that he did not aim to be exhaustive in gathering all omitted figures, nor did he include thirteenth-century figures, having already dedicated another work, Nayl al-Watar min Tarajim Rijal al-Yaman fi al-Qarn al-Thalith Ashar, to the notables of that period .
Structure
The biographies are arranged in alphabetical order according to the subjects' given names, beginning under the letter alif with Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Akwa al-Dhamari (d. 1195 AH) . Each entry provides the subject's lineage, upbringing, teachers, areas of scholarship or administrative roles, and death date when known .
Publication
The work was first printed alongside al-Shawkani's al-Badr al-Tali' in two volumes by Matba'at al-Sa'adah in Cairo in 1348 AH (1929 CE) . It has subsequently been reissued as an appendix in later editions of al-Shawkani's work, including those published by Maktabat Ibn Taymiyyah in Cairo and Dar al-Ma'rifah in Beirut .
