al-Mukhtasar al-Wafi li-Aham Masa'il al-Tahara (The Adequate Compendium for the Most Important Issues of Ritual Purity) is a contemporary jurisprudence treatise authored by Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Askar, outlining core legal rulings concerning ritual purity (tahara) with their textual evidence and scholarly attributions .
Structure and Content
The treatise addresses over 120 legal issues arranged across ten chapters (abwab):
- Waters (al-Miyah)
- Vessels (al-Aniya)
- Removal of impurity (Izalat al-Najasah)
- Ablution (al-Wudu')
- Wiping over leather socks (al-Mash 'ala al-Khuffayn)
- Nullifiers of ablution (Nawaqid al-Wudu')
- Etiquette of relieving oneself (Adab Qada' al-Hajah)
- Ritual bath (al-Ghusl)
- Dry ablution (al-Tayammum)
- Menstruation, irregular bleeding, and post-natal bleeding (al-Hayd wa-l-Istihadah wa-l-Nifas) .
The author structured the text concisely to present the fundamental aspects of each issue in an accessible manner, intentionally omitting intricate secondary legal branchings (tafri'at) .
Method and Sources
In his exposition of each ruling, the author generally indicates the positions held among the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence, followed by the preferred views of later scholars such as Ibn Taymiyya and his student Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya . He subsequently cites contemporary scholars from the Arabian Peninsula who selected that position, including Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir al-Sa'di, Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, and Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin .
Each issue is supported by textual proof assessed as authentic (sahih) or sound (hasan), drawing upon the hadith evaluations of scholars such as Ibn Abd al-Barr, Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Ahmad Muhammad Shakir, and Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani . In the footnotes, the author documents citations to original reference works and provides brief glosses explaining technical terminology .
Reception and Publication
The work received an endorsement from the Saudi scholar Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jibrin on 9 Rabi' al-Thani 1425 AH, in which he commended the selection of necessary purity topics, the documentation of proof, and the references to classical and modern authorities . Al-Jibrin noted that the author, who resided in the city of al-Kharj, contributed to Islamic education and propagation (da'wa) .
A printed edition containing Ibn Jibrin's handwritten marginal comments was published by Maktabat Taybah in 1425 AH, followed by a later revised electronic version dated 13 Jumada al-Ula 1440 AH .
