al-Muhimmat fi Sharh al-Rawda wa al-Rafi'i (Arabic: المهمات في شرح الروضة والرافعي, The Crucial Matters in Explaining al-Rawda and al-Rafi'i), also known as al-Muhimmat 'ala al-Rawda, is an extensive eight-volume reference work on Shafi'i jurisprudence by Jamal al-Din al-Isnawi (d. 772 AH / 1370 CE), completed in 760 AH (1359 CE) .

Purpose and Scope

The work is an analytical commentary and critical apparatus focused on two foundational texts of the Shafi'i legal tradition: Rawdat al-talibin by Muhyi al-Din al-Nawawi (d. 676 AH) and al-Sharh al-kabir (also known as al-'Aziz) by Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i (d. 623 AH) . Al-Isnawi designed the book to clarify obscure rulings, resolve apparent contradictions, rectify textual oversights, and evaluate the transmission of opinions across the two authorities' works .

Method and Structure

Al-Muhimmat is arranged across standard legal topics (furu'), beginning with substantive chapters such as ritual purity (Kitab al-tahara) and sales (Kitab al-buyu'), preceded by biographical accounts of prominent Shafi'i authorities beginning with al-Shafi'i . In compiling the work, al-Isnawi utilized around 170 early and rare Shafi'i sources dating up to al-Nawawi's period, many of which had not been consulted by al-Rafi'i or al-Nawawi themselves, allowing him to trace rulings back to earlier authoritative texts and identify scribal omissions or errors in circulating manuscript copies .

Scholarly Reception and Engagement

Al-Muhimmat became one of al-Isnawi's most celebrated legal compositions and generated substantial scholarly discussion among subsequent jurists . Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi modeled his comprehensive reference Khadim al-Rafi'i wa-al-Rawda on the critical approach of al-Muhimmat . Several scholars composed supercommentaries, emendations, and critiques in response to al-Isnawi's analyses:

  • Siraj al-Din 'Umar ibn Raslan al-Bulqini (d. 805 AH) wrote a critical rejoinder titled Ma'rifat al-mulimmat bi-radd al-muhimmat .
  • Zayn al-Din 'Abd al-Rahim ibn al-Husayn al-'Iraqi (d. 806 AH) authored supplementary emendations titled Muhimmat al-muhimmat .
  • Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn al-'Imad al-Aqfahasi (d. 808 AH) penned al-Ta'liq 'ala al-Muhimmat, frequently disputing al-Isnawi's readings and attributions despite having read the core work under him .
  • Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Hamdan al-Adhra'i (d. 783 AH) composed glosses (Ta'liqat) on the text, though he did not complete them .
  • 'Izz al-Din Hamza ibn Ahmad al-Husayni (d. 874 AH) wrote additions (Tatimmat) .

Abridgments and Rearrangements

Due to its size and utility, al-Muhimmat was rearranged and abridged by multiple Shafi'i scholars:

  • 'Ala' al-Din Mughaltay (d. 762 AH) restructured the material according to jurisprudential headings in Tartib al-Muhimmat .
  • Ahmad ibn Musa ibn al-Wakil (d. 791 AH) produced Mukhtasar al-Muhimmat .
  • Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Sarkhadi (d. 792 AH) compiled an abridgment titled Mukhtasar al-Muhimmat 'ala al-Rawda .
  • Wali al-Din Abu Zur'a Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahim al-'Iraqi abridged al-Muhimmat, incorporating the critical marginalia of his teacher Siraj al-Din al-Bulqini .
  • Taqi al-Din Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad al-Hisni (d. 829 AH) authored Talkhis al-Muhimmat 'ala al-Rawda .
  • Siraj al-Din 'Umar ibn Muhammad al-Fata al-Zabidi (d. 887 AH) abridged the work in 831 AH, restricting it to points concerning al-Rawda while discussing and supplementing al-Isnawi's conclusions .
