al-Muhabbar (The Embellished) is an early Arabic historical, genealogical, and prosopographical handbook compiled by the Baghdadi scholar and genealogist Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Habib (d. 245 AH / 859–860 CE) .

Content and Structure

The work is organized thematically into structured chapters and lists recording historical, biographical, and social data from pre-Islamic Arabia and the early Islamic era . Among its core subjects are:

  • Prophets and Chronology: Time spans and ages between biblical and prophetic figures, and pre-Islamic Arab chronologies .
  • The Life and Lineage of the Prophet ﷺ: His birth, physical likenesses among his contemporaries, his maternal lineages (such as the ‘Awatik and Fawatim), his wives, paternal relations, expeditions (ghazawat), military detachments (saraya), envoys to rulers, and non-clan kinships .
  • Caliphs and Matrimonial Ties: Sequential enumerations of the Rashidun, Umayyad, and Abbasid caliphs, categorizing rulers according to whether their mothers were Qurayshite, non-Qurayshi Arab, or slave-concubines (ummahat al-awlad) . It also catalogs the matrimonial connections and sons-in-law of the Prophet ﷺ, the caliphs, the descendants of Abd al-Muttalib, and the consultative council (Ahl al-Shura) .
  • Pre-Islamic and Early Islamic Prosopography: Registers of pre-Islamic arbiters (hukkam al-‘Arab), generous patrons, leaders of the pilgrimage season, masters of the commercial charters (ashab al-ilaf), calendar intercalators (al-nasa'ah), and opponents of early Islam in Mecca .

Transmission and Reception

The book reached posterity primarily through the transmission of Muhammad ibn Habib's prominent student, the philologist Abu Sa'id al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Sukkari . The author was widely identified by the work itself, receiving the attribution al-Muhabbari . Classical bibliographers and biographical writers, including Ibn al-Nadim and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi, noted the reliability and soundness of Ibn Habib's written works, describing him as authoritative in Arab genealogy and historical lore .

Modern Publication

al-Muhabbar was edited from manuscript by the scholar Ilse Lichtenstädter, with assistance from Muhammad Hamidullah, and published at the Dairatul Ma'arif al-Osmania in Hyderabad, Deccan, in 1361 AH / 1942 CE .
