al-Mudhakkar wa al-Tadhkir (The Admonisher and Admonition) is a hadith treatise compiled by the Basran traditionist and jurist Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Asim (206–287 AH / 822–900 CE), focusing on the virtues of preaching, admonition, and spiritual remembrance .
Subject and Structure
The work is categorized among early specialized hadith compilations dealing with preachers, storytellers, and admonishers (al-qussas wa al-mudhakkirun) . In classical scholarly bibliographies, it is classified alongside subsequent monographs on the same theme, such as Ibn al-Jawzi's Kitab al-Qussas wa al-Mudhakkirin and al-Hafiz al-Iraqi's al-Ba'ith 'ala al-khalas min hawadith al-qussas .
In composing the work, Ibn Abi Asim adopted the method of traditionists (muhaddithun), compiling prophetic traditions and narrations with full chains of transmission (asnad) under descriptive thematic headings, relying on early hadith authorities such as his teacher Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shayba .
Manuscripts and Publication
In several bibliographical sources and manuscript catalogs, the book appears under the extended title al-Mudhakkar wa al-Tadhkir wa al-Dhikr . A manuscript copy of the text was preserved in the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (MS 3847) . The text was edited by Khalid ibn Qasim al-Raddadi and published in Riyadh by Dar al-Manar in 1413 AH / 1993 CE .
