al-Mizan fi Ahkam Tajwid al-Quran (The Balance in the Rules of Quranic Recitation) is a handbook on the rules of Quranic recitation (tajwid) by Feryal Zakariya al-Abd, covering the reading of Hafs from Asim ibn Abi al-Najud via the path of the Shatibiyyah .

Background and Composition

The author, Feryal Zakariya al-Abd, worked as an educational inspector of the Arabic language in secondary education across the Central and Western Alexandria educational directorates in Egypt . Although her original academic background was in Arabic linguistics and language studies, she turned to the Quranic sciences after studying recitation rules in Quran memorization circles under Mahmoud Abd al-Hamid al-Hiti, a professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at Tanta University, under whom she memorized approximately half of the Quran .

The book was conceived as a systematic study to assemble the essential rulings of tajwid for students and instructors in Quran memorization circles . It was published in Cairo by Dar al-Iman .

Content and Review

The manual focuses exclusively on the transmission of Hafs from Asim transmitted through the Shatibiyyah path, grounding its discussions in the classical phonetic and linguistic foundations shared between Arabic grammar and the science of recitation . Prior to its publication, the draft was reviewed and commended by several Quranic scholars, including Hafiz Ayyub, formerly a professor at the Faculty of Usul al-Din at al-Azhar University and religious advisor to the Ministry of Defense of the United Arab Emirates, and Mahmoud Dawud, supervisor of Quranic readings at the Damanhur Qira'at Institute .
