al-Matlab al-Hamid fi Bayan Maqasid al-Tawhid (The praiseworthy quest in clarifying the objectives of monotheism) is a collection of theological treatises, polemical responses, and epistles authored by the Hanbali scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan Al al-Shaykh (1193–1285 AH / 1779–1868 CE) .
Contents and Structure
The work brings together several writings and fatwas by Abd al-Rahman ibn Hasan defending the Najdi reform movement's tenets regarding tawhid (monotheism) and refuting contemporary theological and historical criticisms . The collection includes:
- al-Maqamat: A treatise composed of nine discourses responding to Uthman ibn Mansur al-Najdi (d. 1282 AH), who had claimed that the Ottoman campaign led by Ibrahim Pasha against al-Dir'iyyah—the capital of the First Saudi State—indicated the falsity of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's mission . The response addresses these historical events and defends Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's scholarly lineage and education against Ibn Mansur's claims .
- al-Mahajjah fi al-Radd ala al-Mulaqqab bil-Lujjah: A critique of Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Humayd (d. 1295 AH), author of al-Suhub al-Wabilah ala Dara'ih al-Hanabilah, addressing his biographical entries and his praise of al-Busiri's poetry .
- Irshad Talib al-Huda lima Yuba'idu an al-Rada: An instructional treatise framed as a rebuttal to Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Du'ayj (d. 1268 AH) regarding the impermissibility of residing without censure in areas where polytheism (shirk) and sinful practices take place when one possesses the capacity to object .
- al-Murasalat: A collection of fifty-eight letters and correspondences sent to notable figures, scholars, and individuals, offering religious counsel and addressing contemporary incidents .
- Bayan Kalimat al-Tawhid: A refutation directed against Abd al-Mahmud al-Kashmiri concerning the theological meaning of the testimony of faith (La ilaha illa Allah) .
