al-Masa'il al-Askariyat fi al-Nahw al-Arabi (The Askarian Grammatical Questions in Arabic Grammar) is a classical grammatical work by the grammarian Abu Ali al-Farisi (d. 377 AH / 987 CE) addressing specialized questions and problems of Arabic grammar .

Background and Context

The book forms part of Abu Ali al-Farisi's renowned series of regional question-and-answer works (al-Masa'il), each named after a city or patron associated with its composition or inquiry . Alongside al-Masa'il al-Askariyat, this series includes treatises such as al-Masa'il al-Basriyat, al-Masa'il al-Baghdadiyat, al-Masa'il al-Halabiyat, and al-Masa'il al-Shiraziyat . The nisba al-Askariyat refers to the city of Askar Mukram in the region of Khuzestan, from which scholarly inquiries were directed to him .

Transmission and Classical Reception

In classical bibliographic literature, the work is documented under titles such as al-Masa'il al-Askariyat and al-Masa'il al-Askariya . The Andalusian bibliographer Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili recorded the work in his Fahrasa as a "substantial volume" (juz' dakhm) . He traced its transmission through a chain extending from Abu Ali al-Farisi to Ali ibn Isa al-Rummani, then to Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ibrahim al-Tabrizi, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Hisham al-Mushafi, and Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Mu'ammar al-Madhhiji .
