al-Manzum wa al-Manthur min al-Hadith (The Versified and the Prose of Hadith) is a hadith booklet (juzʾ) compiled by the Khurasanian scholar Abu al-Husayn ʿAfif ibn Muhammad al-Khatib al-Bushanji (d. c. 450 AH / 1058 CE) .
Content and Method
The work presents a collection of prophetic hadiths arranged alongside original poetic renditions of their meanings . For each tradition, al-Bushanji records the text with its full chain of transmission (isnad), transmitting primarily on the authority of his teacher Abu ʿAli Hamid ibn Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Muʿadh al-Raffaʾ al-Harawi . Immediately following each prose narration, the author converts its ethical or legal message into rhymed poetic verses (manzum), introducing his verses with the phrase: "I rendered its prose into verse and said" (جعلت نثره نظمًا وقلت) .
The booklet covers diverse themes, including manners, worship, asceticism, and moral instruction . Among the traditions recorded are:
- The hadith on gratitude: أَشْكَرُكُمْ لِلَّهِ أَشْكَرُكُمْ لِلنَّاسِ ("The most grateful of you to Allah is the most grateful to people") .
- The hadith on social visits: زُرْ غِبًّا تَزْدَدْ حُبًّا ("Visit intermittently; you will increase in affection") .
- The hadith on prayer and faith: بين العبد والكفر ترك الصلاة ("Between a servant and disbelief is the abandonment of prayer") .
- The hadith regarding supplication: لا يُرَدُّ الدُعَاءُ بَيْنَ الأَذَانِ وَالإِقَامَةِ ("Supplication made between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected") .
Transmission and Preservation
The text was read to al-Bushanji in the month of Safar in 414 AH by Abu al-Qasim Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-ʿAsimi al-Bushanji, who subsequently transmitted it in 477 AH . From al-ʿAsimi, it was read by Abu Muhammad ʿAbd al-Jalil ibn Abi Saʿd ibn Ismaʿil al-ʿAdl in 562 AH, and then received by the hadith scholar Abu Muhammad ʿAbd al-Qadir ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Ruhawi .
A manuscript of the work was preserved as part of the endowment of the Diyaʾiyyah library on Mount Qasiyun overlooking Damascus, with an audition (samaʿ) documented for Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Maqdisi .
Publication
The work was edited and its narrations documented by Muhammad Sabah Mansur, and published in a single volume by Dar al-Bashaʾir al-Islamiyyah in Beirut (1423 AH / 2002 CE) .
