al-Mansub ‘ala Naz‘ al-Khafid fi al-Qur’an (The Accusative Resulting from Preposition Elision in the Qur'an) is a grammatical study by Ibrahim bin Sulayman al-Buaymi that examines the syntactic phenomenon of naz‘ al-khafid (the omission of a preposition causing its dependent noun or clause to take the accusative case) as applied throughout the text of the Qur'an .

Context and Purpose

The work was conceived as the third installment in a series of specialized Qur'anic grammatical studies by the author, following two earlier treatises: al-Mansub ‘ala al-Taqrib and a study on completed auxiliary/annulled verbs (Ma tummima min al-af‘al al-nasikhah fi al-Qur’an) . Al-Buaymi focused on grounding grammatical analysis directly in the Qur'anic text and its canonical readings (qira'at) rather than relying primarily on poetic citations (shawahid) whose transmissions might be disputed .

Scope and Methodology

The author surveyed intransitive verbs in the Qur'an to identify instances where transitivity is achieved through preposition elision, distinguishing them from other standard forms of verbal transitivity . In compiling and analyzing these cases, the study draws on classical treatises of Arabic grammar, Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir), Qur'anic parsing (i‘rab al-Qur’an), lexical dictionaries, and modern reference literature—including Dirasat li-Uslub al-Qur’an al-Karim by Muhammad Abd al-Khaliq ‘Udaymah, lexical concordances, and specialized indexes of Qur'anic particles and pronouns .

Structure

The book is structured into a preliminary overview followed by two main chapters:

  • Preliminary Overview (al-Tamhid): Addresses three theoretical foundations:
    1. Verbal transitivity and intransitivity (ta‘addi al-fi‘l wa-luzumuh) .
    2. The signs and indicators of transitivity and intransitivity .
    3. The syntactic attachment of prepositional phrases (ta‘alluq al-jar wa-l-majrur) .
  • Chapter One (Dirasat Naz‘ al-Khafid): A theoretical study comprising five topics:
    1. Definition of the term .
    2. The various conditions of preposition elision in the Arabic language .
    3. The grammatical ruling governing the noun whose preposition has been elided .
    4. The accusative noun following the Hijazi ma (al-mansub ba‘d ma al-Hijaziyyah) .
    5. The distinction between preposition elision and semantic incorporation (al-tadmin) .
  • Chapter Two (al-Mansub ‘ala Naz‘ al-Khafid fi al-Qur’an): An applied study divided into two sections:
    1. Rule-based (analogical) elision (qiyasan): Covers the syntax of anna and an after preposition elision, Qur'anic instances of anna and an, the particle kay in general linguistic usage, and kay within the Qur'anic text .
    2. Usage-based (auditory) elision (sama‘an): Examines elision before individual nouns (al-mufrad), syntactic suspension (al-ta‘liq) and subsequent clauses, elision in suspended clauses in the Qur'an, and cases where the second direct object is made accusative due to preposition removal .
