al-Manhal al-Hadith fi Sharh al-Hadith (The Modern Spring in the Explanation of Hadith) is a simplified commentary on selected hadiths from Sahih al-Bukhari authored by the Egyptian hadith scholar Musa Shahin Lashin (d. 1430 AH / 2009 CE) .

Scope and Purpose

The work was composed as an educational textbook to facilitate the study of prophetic traditions for students at al-Azhar secondary institutes, covering the hadiths designated in their curriculum . In its original four-part division across four academic years, the book covered 290 hadiths—50 for the first year and 80 for each of the following three years—selecting key traditions across most chapters of Sahih al-Bukhari . In another preface, Lashin described the work as encompassing around four hundred hadiths explained in a simplified manner suitable for secondary-level students .

Structure and Method

Lashin structured the commentary for each hadith into consistent pedagogical sections, avoiding unnecessary digressions and overly lengthy elaborations :

  • General Meaning (al-Maʿnā al-ʿĀmm): An introductory overview conveying the core themes and moral guidance of the hadith in simple language .
  • Arabic and Linguistic Inquiries (al-Mabāḥith al-ʿArabiyyah): Clarifications of vocabulary meanings, grammatical constructions, and rhetorical features .
  • Legal Rulings and Derived Lessons (Fiqh al-Ḥadīth / Mā Yuʾkhadh min al-Ḥadīth): An analysis of jurisprudence and practical takeaways, presented separately from linguistic points .
  • Review Questions (Asʾilah): A concluding set of questions appended to each hadith to enable students to test their comprehension .

Publication

The work was published in Beirut by ʿAlam al-Kutub in 1418 AH, appearing in four parts bound in two volumes, credited to Musa Shahin Lashin alongside ʿAbd al-ʿAl Ahmad ʿAbd al-ʿAl .
