Kitab al-Manasik (The Book of Pilgrimage Rites) is an early compilation of legal traditions and narrations pertaining to the rituals of Hajj, transmitted by the Basran traditionist Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah (d. 156 AH / 773 CE) on the authority of his teacher Qatadah ibn Di'amah (d. 117 AH / 735 CE) .

Transmission and Content

The work compiles rulings, prophetic reports, and early legal precedents on the rites of pilgrimage as received through Qatadah . Ibn Abi Arubah's transmission was subsequently recorded and narrated by early Hadith scholars, including Abd al-A'la ibn Abd al-A'la al-Sami (d. 189 AH), whose reception of Ibn Abi Arubah's teachings occurred prior to the latter's confusion of memory (ikhtilat) . The transmission of these pilgrimage traditions under Ibn Abi Arubah was preserved through student recensions, including that associated with Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Qata'i under the title Kitab al-Manasik 'an Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah .

Scholarly Standing

Ibn Abi Arubah is recognized in early biographical literature as one of the foremost and most accurate transmitters of Qatadah's legacy alongside Shu'bah ibn al-Hajjaj and Hisham al-Dastawa'i . While Ahmad ibn Hanbal observed that Ibn Abi Arubah primarily relied on his memory rather than keeping personal written compendia for most subjects, his recordings of thematic material from Qatadah—such as Quranic commentary (tafsir) and pilgrimage rites—formed early subject-specific textual transmissions cited across classical jurisprudence and Hadith literature .
