al-Makhzun fi Ilm al-Hadith (The Preserved [Treasury] in the Science of Hadith) is a biographical work on solitary narrators (al-wuhdan) compiled by the hadith scholar Abu al-Fath al-Azdi (d. 374 AH / 984–985 CE; also given as 367 AH / 977–978 CE) .

Subject and Alternate Titles

The work belongs to the specialized genre of al-wuhdan, devoted to Companions and narrators from whom only a single individual transmitted hadith . In scholarly literature, the book is cited under various descriptive titles, including Man Lam Yarwi 'Anhu Minhum Siwa Wahid ("Those From Whom Only One Person Narrated"), al-Wuhdan by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, al-Makhzun fi al-Wuhdan min al-Sahabah, or simply al-Makhzun .

Method and Reception

The entries are arranged in alphabetical order (murattab 'ala al-huruf) . Under each narrator's entry, al-Azdi examines the single line of transmission through which the individual is known, noting isolated transmitters and offering critical evaluations of the chains of narration (isnad) and texts (matn) .

Later biographical and hadith scholars quoted al-Azdi's critical determinations from al-Makhzun, including Ibn Hajar in al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah and Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, and Ala al-Din Mughaltay in Ikmal Tahdhib al-Kamal .

Manuscript and Publication

A manuscript copy of the work survives in the Ahmet III Library in Istanbul under MS 624/20 (folios 206b–219b) . The text was edited by Muhammad Iqbal Muhammad Ishaq al-Salafi and published by al-Dar al-Ilmiyyah in Delhi, India, in 1408 AH / 1988 CE .
