al-Mahsul fi Usul al-Fiqh (المحصول في علم أصول الفقه, The Harvest in Legal Theory) is a foundational treatise on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) by the Shafi'i scholar and theologian Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (d. 606 AH / 1210 CE) . Composed according to the method of the theologians (tariqat al-mutakallimin), it stands as one of the central synthesis texts in the history of Islamic legal theory .

Sources and Methodology

The work synthesizes and refines the core material of four principal classical treatises on legal theory that preceded it :

  • al-Burhan by Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni
  • al-Mustasfa by Abu Hamid al-Ghazali
  • al-'Ahd by al-Qadi Abd al-Jabbar (along with its commentary al-'Umad by Abu al-Husayn al-Basri)
  • al-Mu'tamad by Abu al-Husayn al-Basri

Al-Razi memorized both al-Mustasfa and al-Mu'tamad by heart . Rather than uncritically compiling his predecessors' opinions, he weighed and evaluated both Ash'ari and Mu'tazili views, employing extensive logical taxonomy (al-sabr wa-al-taqsim), precise division of topics into chapters and sub-sections, and rigorous dialectical arguments . Structurally, al-Razi placed the discussion of conflicting evidences and preference (al-ta'arud wa-al-tarajih) prior to independent reasoning (al-ijtihad) .

In manuscripts and scholarly references, the book appears under slightly differing titles, including al-Mahsul fi Usul al-Fiqh, al-Mahsul fi 'Ilm al-Usul, or simply al-Mahsul .

Abridgments and Commentaries

Owing to its prominence, al-Mahsul generated numerous summaries, commentaries, and critical revisions:

Abridgments

  • al-Hasil min al-Mahsul by Taj al-Din Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Urmawi (completed in 614 AH; d. 653 AH), which later served as a foundation for al-Baydawi's Minhaj al-Wusul .
  • Tahsil al-Usul min Kitab al-Mahsul by Siraj al-Din Mahmud ibn Abi Bakr al-Urmawi (d. 682 AH) .
  • Tanqih Mahsul Ibn al-Khatib by al-Muzaffar ibn Abi al-Khayr al-Tabrizi (d. 621 AH) .
